About the Author

Eloise Renouf graduated from university with a degree in printed textiles. She designed high-end fashion prints for two years for the Timney Fowler Design Studio in London, then moved to New York and spent another year working in design studios, again designing prints for fashion. She established her own stationery business with her partner in 2001; for 8 years, they have designed and published their own greetings cards, selling to stores both domestically and internationally. In addition, she designs giftware and has done commissions for organizations such as UNICEF. She also teaches part time on the textiles degree course at Nottingham Trent University. This is part of their 20 Ways to Draw series of books which now includes Tulip,Dress,Butterfly,Cat and Doodle. They have various authors/artists for the books, and for this one it's Eloise Renouf.The book's a 96-page paperback that you can open flat on the table for drawing.There are no instructions so you basically draw what you see. The theme is actually nature. So besides drawing trees, you also get examples of birds, snails, flowers, berries, insects and even fish, and more. Each subject has 20 illustrated examples. The opposite page is usually blank for you to draw on.The drawings are fun to look at and easy to draw along with. There are nice designs and varying styles.It's a simple fun book for those looking to draw something.

I wanted to love this book a lot more than I did. I still want to love it more than I do, as I flip through it to figure out why I don't love it. The idea is great -- 20 different versions of multiple things you might see out in the world: trees, snails, seashells, owls, feathers, and of course, trees.I think the problem for me is that many of the images, especially the butterflies, appear to be computer rendered. Others, like the birds, are all a very similar shape filled in with different patterning, rather than a variety of birds in a variety of positions. I was looking for new ways to show an object drawn by hand, perhaps new methods for lines or shading. But I got the sense that some of these started as stamps or photographs rather than actual drawings. (I could be wrong, and the artist could just be extremely talented far beyond my own abilities with a pen and paper). The clouds, for instance, are all a similar shape filled in with different zentangle patterns or what appear to be photoshop filters or textures. I felt that many of the images lacked the variety I was hoping for.The pinecones, root vegetables, and citrus fruits were notably full of the types of drawings I expected to see throughout the book, but they were rare.

I bought this book along with Craft-a-Doodle (which is excellent) to inspire me to doodle and draw more for my card-making and crafting. It's basically a bunch of cute doodled versions of various items found in nature (trees, leaves, flowers, birds and bird feathers) in a spread, with a blg blank area for your attempts. That's it. There is no instruction or comment, and I don't find the doodle variations and styles that inspiring. I'd look through this book first to see if it's what you need. It doesn't feel worth the money, to me; I'd start with a book like Craft-a-Doodle first.

For many of the objects in this book, there seemed to be maybe 5 different ways to draw them and about 15 different ways to doodle inside very similar outlines of the same object. Acorns, clouds, snails, daisies, thistles, there wasn't much variation of form. The eggs page is the worst example of this - 20 ovals of different sizes, all in the same orientation. One is just a dotted outline, another is a thicker blue outline filled with a solid color inside. No cracked eggs, no eggs hatching, not even any eggs on their sides.Also, half the pages are blank. I know that the description mentions that there is room in the book for you to draw your own examples, but I did not realize that meant that half of the book would be blank.Some pages have a lot of variation, notably grains, shells, and tulips, but these were exceptions rather than the norm. I gave a one star bonus for this fact, as if the whole book had been like this I would love it.I will be returning this book. Though with the shipping fees I will probably only get a few dollars back, it's still better than having this book I will never look at cluttering up my house.

I can't draw, but I am a doodler. All the edges of my papers have little stuff drawn on them. I love this book. It is easy and fun. What more could you want? No, you won't become a famous artist with this book, but it gives you "amaze and amuse the grandkids" skills. Master one drawing at a time so you can show others how to do it. You will be hearing,"Hey that's cool. Show me how you did that."

The books in this series are all great. In this one, "20 Ways to Draw a Tree", much more than trees are covered. Sure, there are plenty of trees - there are drawings upon drawings of trees - but there are also some other things included. Birds, mushrooms, feathers, and flowers - just to name a few. There is a lot of open space in the book - meant to encourage the reader to become more of a participant by doodling the trees in their own imagination, or practicing the doodles throughout the book.This book is great to keep in my car. It's easy to whip it out and work on a page - practice my doodling - while I wait for kids at various activities. In addition to this volume, I purchased "20 Ways to Draw a Tulip". That book is very similar to this one, and I would recommend both for artists - or doodlers - of any age. These books are good for anyone 8-108.

I really like this book! It inspires me to doodle and create. I like the format. No step by step. Just copy what you see to the best of your ability. My husband and kids were shocked that I bought the book. This mom can still enjoy drawing. ☺

Super fun to follow and draw. Although I would have liked for there to be more drawings. I feel like the book is small for the price. Other than that, I think it’s very cute and anyone could learn a new things or two.

I loved this book. The dynamics of how economic class effects many aspects of our lives are highlighted well in this book. I like how it is written in a very accessible yet smart way. Too many books either this subject have either an anti corporate America activist slant or a how to guideline for slipping into better economic standing. This book simply tells the story of the people in different economic places which I love. This also succeeded at helping me come to terms with my own biases better as certain stories made me angry simply because the storytelling was simple and a matter of fact. Very conscious raising! I give this book four stars instead of five because the academic in me tends to disregard books without a bibliography. But thoughtful research is interspersed through the book. Though the appendix with the survey is excellent.

I bought this book to read along with my 16 year old daughter for a class. We would read the chapters and then discuss it before she wrote her assignment. It brought to light many new topics and such great, interesting, and sometimes sad but uplifting conversations. When I asked her for input on the review she handed me her notebook and said this says it all, I am not writing another review. Her notebook was full of her thoughts about each section of the book, and the many things we had discussed and expanded on. Every evening after dinner we would read and then talk about the things we learned.I personally found the book engaging and food for thought. I love reading, pretty much anything I can get my hands on. This was a educational and enjoyable read.

Class Matters explores income, social class, wealth's causal factors, social class mobility, the reality of the American Dream, old versus new money, class distinctions, types of neighborhoods and enclaves, mixed class marriages, tax policy and the rapidly growing wealth disparity and more. I especially liked the chapter, "Old Nantucket Warily Meets the New." This book provides insight into the very poor to the über-rich and everything in between. It is a fascinating look into social class in America. Each chapter is a separate topic written by a different New York Times contributor. And many real life examples are used to drive the points home. If you enjoy sociology, you will find this book to be a very interesting read.

I read two of the articles in this book when they originally came out in the NY Times and I'm glad they are out in a book form so that they can be read by everyone. The sociologist James Loewen in his book, Lies My Teacher Taught Me, said that the way history is taught in American high schools makes us "stupider" about social class because the subject is entirely avoided. Many Americans think we live in a classless society, one big, happy middle class, though the contrary is true (look how suburban subdivisions are divided by house prices, even on signs: the 300-399K development, the 499 and up, the 899K and up, the 100-159 "starter homes", and so on). A strength of this book for the general reading public is that it approaches class divisions in a number of different ways (healthcare, education, etc) by examining the lives of real people. This is a sociology text that uses concrete instances to elucidate general themes.When I attended Haverford College in the late 1970s and early 1980s after having grown up in a poor, working class neighborhood, I was struck by encountering people who were far more urbane, well-traveled, well-spoken, and well-dressed than I was. It was intimidating, but I learned to be a member of this world (I chuckle now at how kids made fun of my "accent" and corrected my grammar while I was speaking to them) and for the rest of my life I've been going between worlds, conscious of how I speak and act in each (I've "escaped" the social class I grew up in). Because of these experiences this book really resonates with me and I'm sure it will resonate with people who have had similar experiences. For everyone else, it is a welcome introduction to what we Americans are "stupid" about: social stratification in American society and how it determines our behavior, our opportunities, and our health.

Just like several other reviews talk about, the marketing on what you are getting and what you actual get is disappointing. Everything is as advertised, but the exercises through the book are placed in odd locations and there are hardly any of them. I thought this would be more of a prompting/excercise/doodle book. It is more of a sketch book or journal.

I've used Magma books for 6 years and LOVE them. This one has great inspirational quotes and idea generation thoughts every few pages. Wonderful paper that doesn't bleed through. Numbered pages so you can know that everything is consistent. Small pouch in the back for business cards.This is EXACTLY the same size as an iPad Air, so is perfect to carry the two of them back to back. Try their other designs as well. All are good.

The journal itself may be 'ok' but the state it arrived in is very poor. I would have returned it but we had taken the wrapping off it to look at the book. It has two large creases in it running top to bottom as if it has been folded and the outer sides of it are scuffed. Very poor product for the price - disappointing

I love this book and plan to purchase the other ones in the future. The 16 pages of references & exercises were very useful. Overall this book was extremely well made. I highly recommend it.

I had really high expectations for this notebook because it seemed like it's really well designed, constructed, and is of high quality...I've mostly used moleskine's extra large blank notebook and I decided to try this one out because moleskine's pages are too thin for my liking so while this notebook has thicker pages, unfortunately, it does NOT lie flat.that's a HUGE inconvenience.I really wish it would lay flat because then it would get five stars.the little brainstorming tips in there can get annoying because there were more of it than I thought (that sounds helpful but in my opinion it obstructed the blank page) and whether they are helpful or not is yet to be known.the construction is high quality, but the pages are too bright in my opinion. Another point for moleskine is that the pages are off white , but these pages are too bright for my liking.I already opened the shrink wrap so I can't return it and I will try my best to love it. But I might have to switch back to a moleskine after this notebook is finished.

I have this and love it! The paper is nice and thick and all of the pages are numbered. Another reviewer didn't like the idea generation suggestions - personally they don't bother me at all. They are on every third sheet, but always on the left side page. The book has rounded corners so they don't get ragged looking. The cover is thick and sturdy but still flexible and the elastic is sturdy and won't lose it's stretch as you you it.The bookmarks, back pocket, and DIY table of contents are very handy. The only negative is that it doesn't lay flat, but for me the thicker paper and greater number of pages makes it worth it.

A trip down memory lane for anyone from the World War 'll era. It's surprising just how many details of those days made it into this easy read. Mrs. Hart also captured well the naivete of wholesome youth on the verge of adulthood. It was hardly a surprise to learn that this was an actual recount - no doubt from a carefully kept diary.no

I love to read the stories of everyday people. I think history is made up not just of the big picture moments, but of the little moments as well. I noticed that someone gave this book a one and complained that it was just some girl's boring story, but I think that misses the point of a book like this. Ms. Hart has given us a view into a past that no longer exists. I loved her use of phrases common at the time, and descriptions of what life was like for two young ladies on their own for the first time (no house mothers!) in the 1940's. I loved their decision to eat toast and drink hot chocolate to make ends meet for the summer and how they would spend their nickles at the Automat. To me, there is wealth of cultural information here for anyone who wants to see it. All in all, it was a fun read and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in NYC in the 40's.

On the surface, this is just a happy little story of a young girl's summer job. I loved the book because it portrays a time that either brings back memories or teaches a bit about the past. Not only the story of how the store was operated in the war years, but how a young woman from the heartland experienced life in the "big city", and how her upbringing influenced her view of her surroundings in one of the most sophisticated cities in the world. As literally an old lady from Pasadena, I was fascinated by the different cultures portrayed in the book, from the tables at 21 to midwest small town life. I experienced the latter briefly as a young teenager and with a good degree of culture shock, so I enjoyed the time travel.

This is a wonderful piece of history combined with a great story about young women having an adventure in New York City. I love the things that get left out of her letters home. It could be fiction as easily as biography. She's a really nice writer. You get a sense of life in a tight-knit Iowa town. I would really like to see more from Ms Hart about life in that area, that era. It's all so different from what kids are living today and at that same time some of the problems are the same. And so rich in history. I'm really not expressing myself well. I will recommend it for my 18 year old daughter who will be off to college in the fall, and to my sister who is a writer and critical of anything sloppily written (she won't have complaints about this one) and to my dad, who lived all of this from a different prospective, having grown up in Washington DC and having spent the war years in Hawaii and the Pacific.Even if I didn't write the review well, Ms Hart wrote the book beautifully. I started it last night, and didn't get anything else done until I finished it.

Of course being an Iowa girl myself and having a mother and mother-in-law who went to a big city when they were young, I had to read this book. It's a fun look back at small town girls surviving in the big city toward the end of WWII. Nothing too serious here. Jump back to just before the end of WWII. A young Iowa woman on break from college takes off to see the big lights of New York City. With housing out of the way and a new roommate (also from Iowa), the two explore the city and go job hunting. Leads are investigated and strings are pulled with the two getting jobs at one of the biggest jewelry stores in NYC, Tiffany's. See what the two of them encounter both at work and as they spend their days and nights taking all of the city in.

Summer at Tiffany is evocative. I felt instantly transported into Majorie's world. She weaves an engaging tale of WWII era New York city. I was very sad for Summer at Tiffany to come to an end.

Summer .... was a light and interesting beach read! Take your sunscreen, blanket and the book and be prepared for a delightful afternoon.

Love this memoir!! I've shared my copy with many friends! If you like stories from the '40's and have been/are going to NYC, it's a fun read!

We strive to build a layout with realistic engines, rolling stock, structures, track arrangements (trackplan) and then scenic those scenes with untold accuracy to make everything believable. Then we operate our trains and zoom them around the layout servicing these industries in a less than realistic manner... something wrong with that picture?Lance Mindheim's How to Operate a Modern Era Switching Layout is a wonderful look at a subject that is all too often glossed over or "selectively compressed" by many who would have you believe operations are about getting rolling stock from yard to industry in a time frame and order like an act from a Shakespearean play. Operation is far more rudimentary and task specific than that.What is brilliant about his approach is that Lance looks at every aspect of the real world application and relates it to the model. Not the other way around. You will not find fast clocks or tab on cars or car cards, (whilst valid for some layouts or operations as he mentions) this is about modelling the real world operation in real time.I liked the fact that one of the discussions on operation was that the run-around is seldom used in real world operations, and Lance gives all the reasons why, so why do modellers always insist on using them in their operation! How do crews deal with trailing and or facing switches, by not using the run-around... simple, run through to the end of the line and then the facing switches becomes a trailing switch on the return trip. (I admit I am guilty of over-using the run-around, but I repent and have seen the error of my ways). Simple subjects like how to deal with road crossings is covered well, infact like no one else has every written about it that I can remember. Yet every layout I have operated on, has had them... go figure... Thanks again for the enlightenment Mr Mindheim.Real Railroads do not operate switching puzzles, so why do modellers insist on including them in prototypical layouts... if you follow real world strategies and practices that Lance highlights, you will get all the operation you need.Numerous examples accompany how to operate a layout, explained in a logical fashion. The diagrams demonstrate how to achieve the practice and the process of switching. This includes the time taken to complete tasks, such as a conductor walking to throw a switch, open gates, light fuses etc. Another area of interest I liked that Lance covers well is the reasons how cuts of cars are blocked in order to establish a operation. Be it a 30 minute or 2 hour operating session. Also the discussion on "Off Spots" and "hidden spot" for added operational potential is very interesting. (more spots rather than industries is his recommendation... once you read about it, you have an epiphany moment, why didn't I think of that before)The best part of this book, (and there are numerous) is the Gateway Industrial Park; Working example. It shows a small layout which includes a switch list with paper work considerations (oh no not paper work!), and operational potential. Lance walks you through the process, filling in details and fleshing out the operation. Very insightful.If you are new to operation, this is a must read book, if you are an old hand, it just may help make things more enjoyable, without having to rebuild your layout. In any case, there is something in this book for everyone who just wants to get more out of their layout... big or small.

Mindheim represents the best of a new approach to model railroading. One that celebrates the ordinary, and the mundane. Instead of "Toy Train Empires", his book and wonderful blog concentrate on modeling the day-to-day operations of prototype railroads.It's a refreshing, inspiring approach.He also puts emphasis on getting out of the armchair, stop making track plans, and instead get some trains running. I'm happy to say he inspired me to do just that after years of setting on the sidelines.Mindheim represents a fresh new voice inside the "World's Greatest Hobby" and the vanguard of a new movement towards realism, minimalism, and fun.If you're new to the hobby, or just bored with the same old approaches to model trains, I urge you to visit Lance's blog, buy the books, and prepare to be converted.

Ok, like others have mentioned, there is some question to the large font which makes one think this book was being padded. Fine, even I have that grudge on my plate. However, this book explains the stage, like a movie producer, that is simulated model railroading. Compared to a lot of the cookie cutter Model Railroader commentary, this at least addressed the overall aspect of real rail operations. I will admit that after reading it it did change my point of view on the topic of operations. Begrudgingly I will admit that this is currently in my top ten of model railroading books because it is a bit outside the box in its approach to the topic.

This is hands down one of the best model railroad books ever written. The depth of research and information contained in this book is easily worth 3 times it's price. This book has had the most positive impact on my model railroading experience and will probably turn out to be the single most influential book to me about the hobby. It has changed my perspective on how model railroads are operated and given me a much more detailed eye when watching prototype railroads. Even if the modern era isn't your cup of tea, the look into how prototype operations happen is applicable to many eras and layout types. Highly recommended.

Lance could have left off the "modern" and it would still apply to any switching layout in any era. My era is mid 1950's and the tips, tricks, ideas and information in this book applies just as much then as it does now. I have all of Lances' books and have never been disappointed. I consider myself a veteran model railroader but he taught me some new things. With a round-the-room switching layout in progress in my house, this book will come in very handy. I especially like the idea of hanging padlocks below the layout at all places where there are ground throw turnouts and requiring operators to "unlock" the turnout before using it! Just like the prototype. And having a "mailbox" along the fascia for each industry just like real industries do to tell train crews the specific places where they want cars spotted. Great ideas.

Lance has created an excellent resource for helping people operate in a realistic manner and make operating sessions more interesting. By keeping in mind the things pointed out in the book, it can making operating a small layout much more rewarding and make the layout seem much larger. It really helps you create a sense of purpose for why the line is operating. There are a lot of great prototype and model photos. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking to make their operating sessions more interesting and realistic!

Awesome!! Very useful and informative, BUT, I wish it had included more information / details and been a more extensive book. Too short. Typeface / Font used was too large and made it slightly difficult to read.

Tommy Wasserman is Professor of Biblical Studies at Ansgar Teologiske Høgskole, Kristiansand, Norway. He is secretary of the International Greek New Testament Project, serves on the board of the Centre for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts, and has started projects on manuscript transcription and manuscript forgeries for the Museum of the Bible. He is Associate Editor of TC: A Journal of Biblical Textual Criticism. Wasserman has authored and edited several books including The Epistle of Jude: Its Text and Transmission (2006) and Studies in Isaiah: History, Theology and Reception (2017).Peter J. Gurry (PhD, University of Cambridge) is Assistant Professor of New Testament at Phoenix Seminary. He has worked with the Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts and the Museum of the Bible to preserve and publish New Testament manuscripts. Paul Foster writes, "For anybody who cares about the text of the New Testament, there will be few books published in biblical studies over the next decade that will be more important than this one."To say that this book was intellectually taxing for a semi-layperson such as myself, may be understatement! Lol. It only took the other reviewer two days to read, whereas it took me almost two weeks (and many headaches!) to absorb and to finish. He may have had more exposure to the field than myself. I came to this book having only read Aland's Text of the NT, Comfort's Encountering the Manuscripts, Bart Ehrman's Misquoting Jesus, Porter's How We Got the NT and Fundamentals of NT Text Criticism, and a couple chapters of Gordon Fee and Eldon Epp's Theory and Method of Textual Criticism (TC).... plus a few others.In a review of one of David Parker's books, William Varner says that he does not know what all the fuss is about with the CBGM (this was said in 2014 where the method may not have been presented as clearly as in this book- so his mind may have changed). The CBGM is now the method that will underline the Nestle-Aland text. So if one want's to be a responsible user of that text, they will need to be familiar with the CBGM. The fuss is that this is a method that WILL be utilized in TC. It is not going to go away. It is that computers must be utilized in Text-Critical scholarship. Yes there are and may be methodological weaknesses and kinks that need to be worked out, but that does not disqualify CBGM from TC, anymore than rejecting Byzantine-priority disqualifies all Byzantine witnesses. (I assume that Gurry address these issues in his other book titled "A Critical Examination of the Coherence-Based Genealogical Method")All we can do is be thankful to those who have pioneered a new way for us to approach Textual Criticism. Yes they have taken the Genealogical method... but this is indeed a new approach and a new tool. All I can do is stand in amazement.Thanks to Wasserman and Gurry for the excellent content and format of this book- that although the content took time to absorb, the format made it much easier to follow the points being made. The book is wonderful to hold, easy on the eyes, and outright outstanding

It would be better if the text were re-sizeable, with a searchable ToC for phone usage. As it is, it is hard on an old mans eyes and patience. Please reformat for kindle so that the text is re-sizeable with a searchable ToC. Thank you.
