My daughter is a fan of the Daniel Tiger show and also loves book. So when I saw this book, it was a must have. Her favorite character is Baby Margaret, so she was thrilled that there were a few stories that included her. Definitely wish there were more stories with her in it, but overall the collection of stories is great! We are enjoying it every night before bed!

My two year old is obsessed with Daniel Tiger, so I should have known that I’d be stuck reading these stories over, and over, and over! The good news is that repetition is good for the toddler brain, and they make her happy. There are twelve “5 minute stories,” and each is one story line from the actual show. The stories include the song lyrics from those twelve episodes. The compilers picked stories with lessons that seem pretty universal for all tots, so the book can be used as a teaching tool as well as entertainment. The topics include the bedtime routine, grown ups come back, facing fears, going to the doctor, empathizing with people who are different than us (in some ways!), how everyone is special, and more!I like that it’s arranged as a collection because we can read one or many stories at a time, depending on how much time we have. I also like talking to my daughter about the lessons and using the songs to help both of us plan coping strategies for difficult feelings or routines. If you don’t mind rereading the same 12 stories over and over to your toddler, then this is a good choice!

This is a very high quality book, especially for the price! There are 12 stories and 100+ full color pages. I haven't timed it but they seem to take a little longer than 5 minutes to read. My daughter is a huge Daniel Tiger fan and we bring this book when we go on vacation. One book, 12 stories -- big win! Do not hesitate to pick this up if you have a DT fan at home.

Perfect for any avid Daniel Tiger fan. My 2 year old is obsessed with this book; we read many of the stories multiple times a day. My only criticism is that some of the stories are a tad longer than 5 minutes as advertised. I'm not worried this book has paper pages since she knows how to handle books now but be careful with babies who don't know just yet!

This book is delightful! It is sturdy, has thick colorful pages and padded covers. I believe all the neighborhood characters are in the 12 stories. I ordered this for our grandsons 4th birthday. We are taking him to a Daniel Tiger Live show as well.

If you like the show, these are pretty much just those all over again. I try to sing the songs when I read.

This is an adorable book. It takes some of the Daniel Tiger episodes and puts them into short stories. Just like the show, it has vibrant pictures to keep your little ones attention. Overall, my daughter loves this book and its good quality. Cute gift idea.

My Daniel Tiger obsessed 2 yr old LOVES this book. It is always her pick and each story is not too long, and true to Daniel Tiger form each onr has a nice little lesson. Correlates with the shows on the same topic. The only reason not to get it is if you truly do not want to have to read these stories over and over and over again...

Review

“For all those who have lived with Vonnegut in their imaginations . . . this is what he is like in person.”–USA Today   “[This] may be as close as Vonnegut ever comes to a memoir.”–Los Angeles Times “Like [that of] his literary ancestor Mark Twain, [Kurt Vonnegut’s] crankiness is good-humored and sharp-witted. . . . [Reading A Man Without a Country is] like sitting down on the couch for a long chat with an old friend.”–The New York Times Book Review “Filled with [Vonnegut’s] usual contradictory mix of joy and sorrow, hope and despair, humor and gravity.”–Chicago Tribune “Fans will linger on every word . . . as once again [Vonnegut] captures the complexity of the human condition with stunning calligraphic simplicity.”–The Australian “Thank God, Kurt Vonnegut has broken his promise that he will never write another book. In this wondrous assemblage of mini-memoirs, we discover his family’s legacy and his obstinate, unfashionable humanism.”–Studs Terkel“This book is nothing if not a big shot in the arm of concentrated hope.”—The Sycamore Review   “No other American humorist see-saws from gravity to gobbledygook this effectively, in part because for Vonnegut the two are always connected. Life for him is deadly serious, bu the best way to deal with fear is to laugh in its face.”—The Jerusalem Post

About the Author

Kurt Vonnegut’s black humor, satiric voice, and incomparable imagination first captured America’s attention in The Sirens of Titan in 1959 and established him as “a true artist” (The New York Times) with Cat’s Cradle in 1963. KV creates by 'running off at the mind'. He has a great imagination, so everything around him prompts a response - some funny, or not, or prophetic, or insightful - just something. KV's always thinking - about literature, the arts, environmental problems, war, the family, the country, capitalism - and more, much more. "Running off at the mouth", we know, is not praiseworthy, but 'running off at the mind', a la KV, I'd say, is. KV has written here a nice little book. R. Amos, Severn MD

Incredible book that will have to serve as a semi-memoir for a great man. This is the only book I've read by Vonnegut, but it was so good, I took my family to visit his memorial library in Indiana. My daughter read the book out loud on the way home. We were all very moved.

Short, whimsical book. I happen to agree with Vonnegut on most things, so I found it enjoyable. It gives a picture of life in a simpler time, having to actually go out of your house to meet people and have conversations where manners matter. He describes himself as a humanist. I like that. Insightful, lighthearted read with some wisdom thrown in. I think this brief book is way overpriced, though.

Not as good as Wampeters, Foma, and Granfalloons, but it reminds me somewhat of a very loosely written version of it. It reads like an old friend* telling you stories you've already heard, if you've read any Vonnegut at all. That said, it was a quick, enjoyable read and had some good parts, especially about fictional structure. It would be about the last place I would start if new to Vonnegut, though._____________________________*And by "old friend," I mean both one whom you have known for a long time and who is old.

I think I've always given Kurt Vonnegut books 5 stars, but this is the only one I couldn't get into. A bit rambling; at times I felt as if he was writing down his thoughts and didn't go back to edit them before publishing it.

Anyone who writes or appreciates good writing marvels at Vonnegut's economy, humor and insight. I'd not read any Vonnegut for thirty years, but saw these essays on sale and found the master hadn't lost his touch even into his 80s. Short, heartfelt and resonating with humanity.

"A husband, a wife and some kids is not a family. It's a terribly vulnerable survival unit." This is just one of the examples from "A Man Without a Country" that proves Kurt Vonnegut's brilliance. In just this topic - the demise of community and extended family - he captures much of what is wrong in our consumer-society of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.Kurt Vonnegut has long been an observer and commentator of the human condition through some of the most well-crafted prose ever written; and the latest happenings in a world that seems to have gone a bit mad have fueled a fire many of us thought retired at 84 and waiting for death (I seem to remember an interview where he mentions this). But, I am now convinced that our own self-inflicted injuries as a society have at least given us one bright hope...that Kurt Vonnegut might continue to live a long a productive life for a good deal longer. It is obvious that the current state of affairs in the world have Mr. Vonnegut mad - hopping mad - and he is writing about it.While pointing out how messed up we are, Mr. Vonnegut is also telling us to lighten up. This book is hard to sum up in a short review, but I think that I will let one last quote from this fantastic book do the job for me: "We are here on Earth to fart around. Don't let anybody tell you any different.">>>>>>><<<<<<

Vonnegut comes out of retirement to make a commentary on present day America. We know it is such, as he speaks of his pure bred German American roots. He shows through scintillating explanations and elucidations that there are serious problems in this world, and particularly in this country. He does not hide his contempt for the blatant middle class assault and corporate free for all that has been going on during the current administration. With a smooth and slightly dryer than normal tone, Vonnegut gives us chapters of wisdom regarding the general environment around us. In most of them, he indicates the failure of men to be good stewards and guardians of the Earth as our main resource. He is concerned about the kind of world we have created and where his grandchildren will end up. How could we even imagine projecting out 50 years in the information age? The world we have created is likely to reflect the way we have treated it and that treatment has been pretty shabbily handled.Long time Vonnegut readers can see the shift from one who thought perhaps there was a way of saving ourselves to one who is less naïve about human ways and means. His approach is more considered. His experience is so much greater. He indicates that he has given up on the human race. He can not teach them what they need to know, because they do not care to listen. The book is recommended for all Vonnegut readers, especially long term ones. Also, all readers interested in a long watcher or life's comments on the state of the world he is to leave somewhere not so long down the road. Excellent commentary!

I read these books in my childhood and wanted a fresh edition for some work I'm doing. The stories are as I remembered them, well written and wonderful examples of their time. This review is for the physical object, the book itself. The formatting is awful, it looks like a xerox of typewritten pages. The page breaks are weird, with a chapter title two-thirds of the way down a page, followed by a huge blank space, or a chapter title at the bottom of a page. A poem in Little Women is transcribed as prose, with no line breaks, making it look like strange prose. The publisher did not, in my opinion, respect the work, just reproduced it, with odd and frequent typos. It feels as though the people doing the transcribing didn't actually know English but were just typing whatever was in front of them.

Until I got this compilation, I had only read Little Women (including the second part referred to here as "Good Wives". I enjoyed the whole set. If you've never read any of this series, you should know in advance that they are quite maudlin and exceedingly moralistic. The March family of "Little Women" is a good study of differing roles of womanhood, actually presenting non-traditional roles (through Alcott's alter ego, Jo March) as desirable and not unwomanly. Marriage was woman's ultimate goal and responsibility at that point in US history. Jo, our heroine, is the quintessential tomboy with a passion for literature, writing stories as well as exciting, daring plays, which she produces and acts in with her sisters. Jo flaunts accepted mores of the time by refusing to marry Laurie (aka Teddy) the childhood friend who loves her. He is rich and a "good match" for her, but she does not love him romantically. She heads off to New York where she is a governess for the children of and writes sensational stories for local magazines and newspapers. A mentor, Professor Bhaer, encourages her writing but suggests she draw her stories from her own life and experience. Older sister Meg is more stereotypically feminine. She dreams of a rich lifestyle, but falls in love with and marries a "poor" man (the March family's poverty bears little resemblance to poverty as we know it today). In the later books, Meg virtually disappears. Even her twin children leave home for boarding school at Aunt Jo's private school (more on that later). One wonders if Meg isn't a little bit lonely and a little bit unsatisfied with her choices. Younger sister Beth is the family saint who dies young having never left home, yet content with leaving her legacy of sweetness, domesticity and charity. Her story is the central tragedy in the books and as her life ends, the reader cannot avoid tears. Youngest sister Amy is babied and petted resulting in a spoiled, self-centered little girl who goes to Europe with an aunt and uncle, where she matures into a lovely young lady determined to wed a rich man. However, she turns down a marriage offer from a rich suitor and wins the heart of Laurie, to the delight of everybody, including the reader. Jo, having returned home to nurse Beth, is happy for Amy and Laurie but wonders if spinsterhood is her future. She decides her best future is to support her family with her writing, a decision which is bittersweet as she ponders the loss of love. Lo and behold, Professor Bhaer arrives and declares his love. They marry and as equal partners open a school on the grounds of Plumfield, the home of rich family matriarch, Aunt March. Subsequent books follow the lives of students at the Bhaer's school, with all their strengths, weaknesses, follies, foibles and adventures. These classic books should be in the stable of every child's home library. However, if you read to your children, prepare the read these over a long period of time. There are very fews sections where the reader is not in danger of leaking around the eyes. I read Little Women (and Good Wives) to my daughters. They think they know the entire story, not knowing how much I left out because I was too choked up to continue.

I have no quibble with the authoress, as these stories of the March family, that stand in so well for her own, have certainly stood the test of time. It did strike me, on reading these books as an adult how liberal, idealistic, and romantic they are. Liberal in the progressive social views, especially on education and women's rights. Idealistic in the solid belief in the virtues of family, faith, and friendship. And decidedly romantic, in the simple belief that love conquers all.My quibbles, in fact, are with this kindle edition. While it is well indexed and easy to move around within this edition, there are many distracting typos, especially in the third volume. The first book is nearly perfect, the second less so, and the third kind of a mess. Still, to have all of these words available to me at such a miraculous price is such a joy that it seems small of me to complain. So I will merely mention it, and leave off one star.

The classics written by the woman who was, in her time, the best selling author among the New England literati who were her father's friends. These are all a rather rose picture of some of the ideals of the Transcendentalists. I shall always remember Jo carrying a warm backed potato in her hands to keep them warm in the bitter New England winter. More than that I shall always remember the love deeply embedded in this family of women whose father & husband has gone off to war, leaving them to manage their way through poverty by the creativity which is so much a part of the lives of each.

Super fabulous classic so the title itself is a 5+ (get it; you will love it)I have this version 4 stars because I purchased this for a child who is up to this level of reading. The text is small and there are no pictures (which is not necessary to read this book but a few etched illustrations every 50 pages would improve the book experience immensely. I would have purchased a different text if I had the time before Xmas. But I hope this niece loves the book nonetheless!

"Little Women" was just the first book in a series of four books about the March family. The subsequent books go on to tell the stories of the characters as they travel through the years of their lives. It was so rewarding to share in their happiness and heart-breaks. These susequent books showed how their unfailing belief in God helped them get through some of the most difficult challenges they faced. It also showed how they never forgot to show their gratitude for all their blessings. Their faith was unwavering. These books were a great inspiration to me. I hope they will be for you also.
