This looks like a fun book to read at the beginning of spring. However, I will read it to my second grade class after we read a bio about Thomas Jefferson. The illustrations look just beautiful!

wonderful children's book

We are using this book in Primary and Elementary Schools along with the AM Farm Bureau "First Peas to the Table" yearly contest.Kids love it.

I loved the book and the Ag. Farm Contest. I have lower grades doing a campus contest against each other. The sixth graders are entering the national contest! Loads of learning fun! Ann

I just checked this book out for the second time (first time was a year or two ago) and we enjoyed it all again! Read it aloud to my kids ages 15, 13, 10, 9, 7 & 4.Perfect for springtime, when new gardens are right around the corner!, and ties in beautifully with our American Rev study, where they are meeting Thomas Jefferson up close and person. As others have said, there are many layers of wonderful-ness in this book! Don't miss it! ...As for me, I'm going to buy some pea seeds this week!!

We had the pleasure of visiting this author's vegetable garden. Susan Grigsby is an incredibly sweet and down to earth person. She gave a copy of her book to my daughter, and showed us the pea plants growing in her garden. I thought the book would be a little too advanced for my daughter's reading level but she absolutely loves it. We read it every night. The book has many layers of lessons, from interracial friendships to heathy competition, and learning about the joy of gardening, as well as the story of a president. As a result of the book, I hear my four year old say on a fairly routine basis, "these peas are as sweet as sugar, mommy! I love peas."We also got some dry peas and soaked and grew them exactly as described in the book. It is a joy to see a little kid develop a relationship with 'her' plant. This book facilitates so much learning in such a fun way that kids think it is fun to learn. This book has become my default birthday present to give to other kids in our circle. All the parents report that kids absolutely love this book.

This is an inspiring and engaging book for children and will motivate them to pick up gardening! Following in the footsteps of avid gardener Thomas Jefferson, the students of Ms. Garcia's class are given a challenge - a First Peas to the Table Contest, where the winner will be the first student to fill up a small bowl with peas harvested from the student's own pea plants. The prize is a beautiful emerald crown, and Maya can't wait to get started. The story follows Maya's failures and triumphs as she works diligently to get her little seedlings going, and in the process discovers not only the various complexities involved in producing a good crop, but a lesson about what really matters, and it is not about winning. The text is easily readable and the vocabulary did not pose much challenges for my first grader. She enjoyed reading this story, and we had a short discussion about the historical background to the story, and about Thomas Jefferson's pioneering methods in agriculture. We are now inspired to try the First Peas to the Table Contest for ourselves!

Ms. Garcia has challenged her students to grow peas in small garden plots at school, with the first student to fill a bowl with shelled peas winning a beautiful green crown. Both Maya and Shakayla really want to win the pea race, so they turn to their history books to learn about Thomas Jefferson's methods for testing which seeds and plants would grow best.Couched in a modern-day classroom tale, this picture book teaches children about Thomas Jefferson's innovations in farming methods and contributions to agricultural production. With a growing number of families becoming more cognizant of the health benefits of eating fresh fruits and vegetables, the book can help children better understand the feasibility of starting their own small gardens.

Be careful here: the title aside, this is not just a list of the "top trails" in Utah. It is a list of the top recreational destinations in Utah and surrounding states. And it is remarkably well done. The author, Eric Henze, is captivated by the southwest, and in particular the Grand Circle" of national parks and monuments found in Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and Colorado. If you have the time for some extensive exploration in Utah, the heart of the Grand Circle, then this book is likely tailor made for you. He describes here almost every state park, national park, monument, and recreation area in the region. Beautiful pictures and park maps accompany the text. So, this is not a true hiking guide, but hiking does figure prominently in the text. Henze recognizes that not all his readers will want hard core challenging multi day hikes in the arid backcountry of these parks. So he includes trails tailored for every ability level. Dozens of half mile, handicap accessible trails are found within these pages. I personally appreciate that. My wife is permanently disabled but she likes to get out and explore as she is able, and most authors overlook short trails like these. But dedicated outdoor enthusiasts need not be put off by the short trails. Henze also includes strenuous hikes only the uber fit will enjoy. And just about everything in between. It's a great hiking guide (and camping guide, fishing guide, 4wd guide, museum guide, etc. it's all included here.)So, if this is such a great book, why not give it 5 stars? I want to. The author, by his own account, does these books as a labor of love and it shows on every page. But I have 3 minor concerns: the first is, I think the title does mislead a little. It does not cover all of Utah. I lived in Logan for a time and the northern part of the state is not described here. But Logan has some great outdoor recreation. It is definitely worth a visit. Second, it somehow misses my favorite Utah state park, even though it is within the boundaries of the book. Freemont Indian State Historic park features some of the finest rock art anywhere, and has numerous short to medium length trails to explore. I hope it appears in the next edition. Finally, this book is one part of a series. I purchased all of them. They are all good. But there is significant overlap within the series. 15 of the 34 parks found here are also found in the Arizona "top trails" book. So if you are going to Utah for a few weeks to explore, this is your book, but if you are planning an extended spring visit to the Grand Circle area and buy all the books, you will find a lot of information repeated. Still in all, I enjoy the series and highly recommend this title in particular.

Amazon.com Review

Let's get one thing straight: Carl Hiaasen doesn't like the Walt Disney Company. Whenever the giant entertainment conglomerate stumbles, as it did with its proposed Civil War theme park in Virginia, Hiaasen cheers. When a rhinoceros mysteriously dies at Disney's new theme park, Animal Kingdom, Hiaasen secretly hopes for the worst, because, as he writes, "no scandal is so delectable as a Disney scandal." A native of Florida, author of such thrillers as Lucky You and Strip Tease, and a journalist for the Miami Herald, Hiaasen comes by his dislike for Disney honestly. He has witnessed the relentless success of the Disney machine firsthand with the development of Disney World and other properties around Orlando. In Team Rodent: How Disney Devours the World, Hiaasen paints a witty and sarcastic portrait in this nonfiction account of a company who can control the press, manipulate local governments, and because it's Disney, get away with it. Team Rodent is a quick, entertaining read that even the most loyal Disney shareholder (except maybe Michael Eisner) will find enlightening and amusing. --Harry C. Edwards

Carl Hiaasen is undoubtedly one of the funniest novelists in recent memory. In his hilarious novels, he revisits some recurring themes, including contempt for the many tourists who flood Florida and the out-of-control development of the state and the resulting demise of the native flora and fauna. The stories and characters he writes are memorable, making his curmudgeonly anti-tourist, anti-development tolerable and amusing. In Team Rodent: How Disney Devours the World, a collection of essays criticizing all things Disney, that curmudgeonly side takes over, leaving none of the charm and engaging story telling of Hiaasen's novels. I don't know if Hiaasen genuinely hates Disney, but it sure sounds like it. He lets his bitterness blind him to anything positive that he might have said.Hiaasen objects to the political and economic control Disney wields in Florida. From the start, when they secretly started buying up land, they managed to keep their intentions quiet so that property values would not increase too quickly. To Hiaasen, this unconscionably cheated landowners out of a fair price for their land. Then Disney established their own municipality in order to have more control and autonomy in the area around the park. Maybe Disney has more overreach than other large corporations, and maybe they have abused their autonomy, but on balance, it sure seems like Disney has been a boon for Orlando and the surrounding area.I think it's strange when Hiaasen complains about Disney being too nice. For instance, he bemoans the loss of X-rated entertainment venues in Times Square. He writes, "Peep Land [a porn shop] is important precisely because it's so irredeemable and because it cannot be transformed into anything but what it is. . . . Standing in Disney's path, Peep Land remains a gummy little cell of resistance. And resistance is called for." What kind of person celebrates the existence of Peep Land and criticizes the existence of a Disney store?Similarly, he criticizes Disney's cleansing of Castaway Cay, their cruise line's private island. Before Disney bought it, it was used by drug runners to fly in drugs from South America to be smuggled into the U.S. Their reimaging of the island is "a small illustration of how Team Rodent untarnishes reality, acquiring and recasting to its own designs." Somehow in Hiaasen's universe it's a bad thing for a company to transform an island into a playground where tourists can have a fun and safe vacation.Team Rodent is certainly funny at times with Hiaasen's trademark humor. But his hatred of Disney clouds his reporting so deeply that I have a hard time respecting his criticism. I will still eagerly snap up Hiaasen's novels, but this anti-Disney screed is too much.

There are a lot of things that go on in this world and our country that most people are totally oblivious. There is a dark underbelly that seethes with evil. Granted, every organization of every kind is going to have some problems. The difference is what those groups do with those problems: do they hide them, or do they expose them to the light and move on?Hiassen asserts in TEAM RODENT that there is a lot going on with the Walt Disney Company that most people don't know about and would be shocked to learn. TEAM RODENT offers a few examples of the evil that lurks withing the mighty Mouse House and suggests that if the opportunity arises to stand against the Goliath Rodent, people should.I throughly enjoyed reading Hiaasen's book. It was short (like all the books in the Library of Contemporary Though series), but provocative. The accusations were sprinkled with just enough humor to make one laugh, yet not forget what was read. I was not at all upset by Hiaasen's bias against the Mouse House because it added to the flavor of the book. Besides, I have thought for a long time that Walt Disney would not be very happy where his company has been headed the last fifteen years. Just look at what Disney did with children's radio and Radio Aahs; that would make an excellent chapter in TEAM RODENT.Interesting reading that will probably provoke a few thoughts, produce a laugh, or both.

I really enjoy Carl Hiaasen's view of life in South Florida, so when I discovered that he had written a non-fiction book chronicling the rise of the Disney empire, I wanted to read it. I did (about 10 years ago) and I was not disappointed. The reason that I am writing this review is because I reread it a couple of weeks ago while I was on a Disney Cruise. Oh Boy, did lots of new realizations appear before my eyes as my family and I cruised the Caribbean with the Mouse. Lots of details from the book just kept popping up - and, through it all, we had a fantastic "magical" time. For anyone heading for any Disney adventure, get this book and read it as you vacation. It is a fast, funny account of the highly programmed world that you find yourself thoroughly enjoying.

Well, call me guilty of schadenfreude -- but I really enjoyed this book. The thing is, everybody loves Disney. It is like speaking heresy during the inquisition to say that Disney may not be perfect! And, assuming that the author's stories are true, it is sorta fun to see the great organization given some grief for its relentless building and "never explain, never apologize" philosophy. The thing is, when I and my friends went to Disneyland as children, I just hated the place. And I felt so "in the closet" on the issue. I mean, no kid admits to hating Disneyland! But it seemed so crass/crowded/overblown to me. And then, when I saw the movie "The Shaggy Dog," I was just blown away by the incredible lack of ethics I saw (note the reaction of the heroine when it turns out her father is the villain). After that, I was always suspicious that Disney might not have our best interests at heart -- that, God forbid, its goal might be simply to make a profit. So, OK, that really isn't a bad goal for a corporation.... But neither does it mean that their stuff is so perfect. So, I liked the book. Perhaps Mr. Hiasen and I are the only two Americans to feel this way -- but I believe he is correct. Very amusing reading.

Woe Is I: The Grammarphobe's Guide to Better English in Plain English, 3rd Edition

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Former New York Times Book Review editor and linguistic expert O'Conner (Words Fail Me, You Send Me) updates her bestselling guide to grammar, an invigorating and entertaining dissection of our ever-evolving language. In this third edition, O'Conner guides readers through conversational conundrums with aplomb, filling in not only the logic behind the appropriate choice for, say, possessives, but also explaining such oddities as the spelling of restaurateur (instead of a "restauranteur"), the proper pronunciation of prix fix ("pree feeks") and a slew of mnemonic devices to help amateur grammarians keep ifs, ands and buts in check. It's these small digressions that make the book so readable, even for those with a deep-seated hatred for grammatical do-goodery. O'Conner gleefully eviscerates poor sentence construction and dangling participles, soothes verb tension and debunks the frequently intimidating semicolon with finesse. Tempered with a heavy dose of wit (reaching its nadir in her chapter on clichés), O'Conner's lively treatise is as vital as a dictionary for those who wish to be taken seriously in speech, in print or on Facebook.

I have been reading a number of grammar, writing, and style books. In my opinion, Patricia T. O’Connor’s Woe is I is a great book and stands out among others. All of us—even those with extensive knowledge of standard English—can benefit from this book. Not only does O’Connor sometimes show her sense of humor and wit, but she is able to reach out to all readers with a simple, helpful, and easy-to-follow style. Instead of using unnecessary grammatical terms, she speaks to her entire audience in layman’s terms, breaking down some of the hard rules and providing helpful pointers to troubleshoot difficult concepts. I found her list about words written both as one word or two words as helpful and useful. (i.e., a while or awhile, all ready or already, every day or everyday).O’Connor’s simple and direct style is not only impressive, but refreshing. In fact, much can be gleaned by all, even readers who may find standard English daunting at times. Overall, I found this book clear, concise, and easy to read and follow.

This is by far the best book on grammar I've ever read. Many are glorified glossaries (which can be good at times), but Woe is I provides you with information that is presented in a more narrative approach that helps you retain the information. However, the way the book is organized into small chunks within the chapters allows you to go back and find information easily. Don't skip any chapters, even if you think that it might be dull or that you have those concepts down. I almost did. But once I got a few paragraphs in, I found myself continuing on and picking up all kinds of great information along the way.The presentation is also great. O'Conner keeps things from getting dull with her sense of humor.

"Woe is I" caught my eye in a bookstore, with its cutesy title, where it stood out against the dry, text-like grammar references in a quick scan. Patricia O'Conner did not disappoint, and her advice nearly always hits its mark for people who actually care about the finer points of grammar. The book is much more about grammar than the popular "Eats, Shoots, & Leaves", and I easily preferred this one.The author ranges from grammar and usage concepts to exact details on words and punctuation. She mixes in some fun and cute examples, which I can understand would put off some people, whereas I found it part of the pleasure of the book because the author didn't go overboard.I consider myself pretty solid on usage and grammar, and was happy to discover many topics confirmed my own thoughts and style, even when I didn't explicitly realize the rules she spelled out. It was good to learn exactly why some of those rules were true, and her flexibility on such items as split infinitives was refreshing. She covered some areas I sometimes struggle with (e.g., "she dislikes my smoking", "who" vs. "whom", and "like" vs. "as") and identified relatively obscure examples I probably get wrong and now can try to do properly. Isn't that one of the reasons to read a grammar book, anyway?Perhaps the only topic about which I disagreed was whether to use apostrophes in certain plurals, as in 1970s vs. 1970's, which she admits is no big deal and basically a coin toss anyway. The chapter on e-mail best practices is good advice, even though it doesn't really fit with the book's emphasis on grammar.

While I can identify the correct sentence in a multiple choice selection, I can't tell you why it is correct. That tends to make writing somewhat problematic at times.Enter "Woe is I," a first-rate grammar reference book (or read several pages at once). It provides just enough discussion and explanation for things to make sense, while omitting the tedious jargon-filled details that make your eyes cross. Other grammar books assume a level of knowledge of "grammar-speak" that I just don't possess. So if like me, you need your explanations served up in straight-forward English, this is the book for you. Bonus: as other reviews mention, her examples are amusing, making for engaging and entertaining reading as well. What has been valuable to me (so far)? I'm well on my way to losing my apostrophe phobia, I'm beginning to look for excuses to use the "unloved" semicolon, and I have real hope that I may get my verb tenses right - consistently.I bought the hard copy version (only because the third revision Kindle version was not offered at that time), but I now own - and use - both. Yes, it's that kind of book.

We can't assume that, just because we use spell check on the computer, we are writing properly. It seems as though nowadays every word ending in an "s" calls for an apostrophe. It is a matter of choice as to whether the apostrophe comes before or after the "s". Menus, signs, and classified ads always feature creative writing, punctuation and spelling. Every edition of the local newspaper is riddled with grammatical errors. I want my writing to say something better about me. I didn't learn to diagram sentences in high school, so I need some extra help to make sure I am communicating effectively and not showing my ignorance any more than necessary. If you find yourself re-writing sentences because you are not sure about your grammar, this is just the book for you. When I read the book I found several areas where my language use was just not up to par. "Woe Is I" is short enough and has enough flow that you can read it straight through. Then, when you are in the midst of writing, you can refer back to troublesome areas until you become accustomed to using better English. I keep it right beside the computer at work. Then, if I need help figuring out if I should use "its" or if "it's" is proper, I can quickly double check. "Woe Is I" is a really helpful and portable little book.

Rosenfelt has done another incredible job here. For those already familiar with the life and times of criminal defence attorney Andy Carpenter this is another serving at the table of that five-star meal. While this is book 18 in the series it is written to stand alone (and leave you hungry for more) if you are sitting down to this feast for the first time. When you add lawyers, puppies, and outstanding sarcasm to a meal of murder and mayhem you get some amazing results: Tasty and rare but very well done.

This is the best Andy Carpenter book yet. You could read this as a stand-alone and love it. This book grabs your interest and keeps it through to the very end. Once again Rosenfelt brings an issue to the forefront, that of homeless veterans and their struggles. He weaves it into the story masterfully. The book is very good and if you're an Andy Carpenter fan, you'll love it. I think you'll like it even if you've never read any of the other books. I thought "Rescued" was the best yet and "Deck the Hounds" is just as good.

The book was right on track with the world today. So many forgotten vets.are homeless. Mr. Rosenfelt always writes great stories , laced with humor. The Christmas part of the story could have been written by my own husband. He wants our tree to be left up as long as possible. It's always late in January when he gives in and takes it down. He would like it left up all year and decorated for the different holidays. He really is a sweetheart. The story was good and I enjoyed it but I like all his books..

I love Andy Carpenter books. The first person narration by Andy, a reluctant lawyer, is funny and moves fast. Add the cast of familiar characters, including the mysterious and very tough Marcus, Andy's partners in a dog rescue facility, his wanna be PI (a CPA computer wiz), and his own dog and family, and these books are great reads. How Andy solves and wins his cases is almost always good, as well. This particular entry in the series is especially fun and the mystery intriguing.

I have been reading this series since the first book was released years ago, I have to say I have enjoyed every book. Some more than others, but the series is a five star series. There are always laugh out loud moments and I am really enjoying the growing relationship they have with their adopted son. This book could be read as a stand alone if you are not familiar with this series, but don’t miss out. Read them all.

Rosenfeld is the best writer around. All his books are so much fun. The mysteries are complicated and hard to solve. His humor isclever. And I love his love and appreciation for dogs. This book is another winner. I'm always sad when one of them is over.

David Rosenfelt's Andy Carpenter series is outstanding. There's usually a murder involved but it's written with humor throughout, and always involves dogs. I'm a cat person, myself, but love the characters in these books who are each unique and interesting. Andy is a lawyer who doesn't want to work, and I find myself laughing through each book. Each time I finish one, I always think the next one can't possibly be as good, but it's always better than the last. This series progresses with each book, so I would advise a new reader to start with the very first one rather than starting in the middle or with the last book.

David Rosenfelt/Andy Carpenter simply does not disappoint! These books have so much going for them: the law and how it works; a reluctant but excellent lawyer; great family images; a wacky bunch of characters; a genuine mystery which must be solved to save Andy's client/s; and dogs, dogs, dogs. It may be that Rosenfelt and I are on the same humor wavelength, but he manages to get me to laugh - or at least to chuckle - on every page. What could be a better Christmas present than that?

This book is a compilation of American Indian proverbs and prayers. Since I am American Indian, this book soothes my soul. I buy this book on a fairly regular basis for special friends of mine. Very uplifting, and we all know that we need all the uplifting we can get these days.

I first saw this book in an office I visited weekly. I was drawn to it each time I waited for my appointment. The Native American proverbs within gave me inspirational satisfaction, Now that I own it I can go to it whenever I want to hear something short, but meaningful. There are many sayings for me to reflect on, example: "Seek wisdom, not knowledge. Knowledge is of the past, wisdom is of the future." In a few words, "The greatest strength is gentleness."

Great, everyone should read this. It opens our closed minds

Beautifully presented. Thank you.

Food for thought Native American, style! Some very excellent proverbs....

Review

“The Dogon creation myth reflects the nuances of cutting-edge scientific cosmology, and finally this is being recognized. A quintessential read for anyone wishing to learn the truth about this fascinating subject.” (Andrew Collins, author of From the Ashes of Angels)“The Science of the Dogon decodes the opaque symbols of Dogon creation myth with great ingenuity backed by solid scholarship. Highly recommended.” (Ida P. Moffett, editor and copublisher of The Pale Fox)“The Science of the Dogon takes the study of the ancients to an exciting new level. Laird has cracked the visual code of the Dogon, and his explanations are thoroughly supported.” (William Henry, author of Egypt: Stargate Discoveries video series and guest host of “Dreamland)". . . anyone who is remotely interested in our ancient past, ancient myths and traditions, and even how religion might enter into all this, will find Scranton's work intriguing." (The Messenger, Jan 2007)"The author makes a convincing case for some intervening force in ancient times that left extremely important clues to their existence with the prevailing natives, knowing perhaps that someday someone would be aware of their presence." (W. Ritchie Benedict, New Dawn, May-June, 2007)"Enjoyable reading and a hands-on educational approach make this book very enjoyable. Readers will find the conclusion about the Dogon way exciting reading." (Lee Prosser, Ghostvillage.com, Aug 2007)"The implications that are posited in Scranton's book are nothing short of earthshaking, considering that the Dogon appear to have gained these sophisticated insights through some sort of sixth sense. " . . . The Science of the Dogon should prove to be a revolutionary force, especially with regard to integrating the Dogon cosmological vision into our own lives." (Jaye Beldo, Mysteries Magazine, Issue #18, Fall 2007)" . . . superb scholarly book, which gives overwhelming support to the O'Brien thesis of a single benevolent advanced source for civilization." (The Golden Gate Project, Feb 2008)"Scranton is a lucid writer who articulates both scientific and cosmological concepts exceedingly well, and is transparent in his methodology. He amply demonstrates the skill set to perform such a demanding analysis, and I hope he continues further with his work." (Eric K. Lerner, Ashè Journal, April 2009)“The whole text reveals striking similarities between Dogon symbols and those used in both the Egyptian and Hebrew religions, with amazing implications for the history of civilization. The material is an advance on the revelations that made Robert Temple’s The Sirius Mystery an international bestseller.” (Mysteries of Sirius, October 2013)

From the Back Cover

ANCIENT MYSTERIES / AFRICAN STUDIES“The Dogon creation myth reflects the nuances of cutting-edge scientific cosmology, and finally this is being recognized. A quintessential read for anyone wishing to learn the truth about this fascinating subject.”--Andrew Collins, author of From the Ashes of AngelsThe Dogon people of Mali, West Africa, are famous for their unique art and advanced cosmology. The Dogon’s creation story describes how the one true god, Amma, created all the matter of the universe. Interestingly, the myths that depict his creative efforts bear a striking resemblance to the modern scientific definitions of matter, beginning with the atom and continuing all the way to the vibrating threads of string theory. Furthermore, many of the Dogon words, symbols, and rituals used to describe the structure of matter are quite similar to those found in the myths of ancient Egypt and in the daily rituals of Judaism. For example, the modern scientific depiction of the unformed universe as a black hole is identical to Amma’s Egg of the Dogon and the Egyptian Benben Stone. The Science of the Dogon offers a case-by-case comparison of Dogon descriptions and drawings to corresponding scientific definitions and diagrams from authors like Stephen Hawking and Brian Greene, then extends this analysis to the counterparts of these symbols in both the ancient Egyptian and Hebrew religions. What is ultimately revealed is the scientific basis for the language of the Egyptian hieroglyphs, which was deliberately encoded to prevent the knowledge of these concepts from falling into the hands of all but the highest members of the Egyptian priesthood. The Science of the Dogon also offers compelling new interpretations for many of the most familiar Egyptian symbols, such as the pyramid and the scarab, and presents new explanations for the origins of religiously charged words such as Jehovah and Satan.LAIRD SCRANTON is an independent software designer who became interested in Dogon mythology and symbolism in the early 1990s. He has studied ancient myth, language, and cosmology for nearly ten years and has been a lecturer at Colgate University. He also appears in John Anthony West’s Magical Egypt DVD series. He lives in Albany, New York.

Well, if you ever wondered where did we come from and how our evolution has been affected, reading this book will add even more questions, but also shed some light to these questions. You will wonder, who/why the Dogons have these "myths" (to me, the definition of the word "myth" is "history that wasn't written down because at the time there was not writting, but was kept alive from mouth to mouth") and celebrate the arrival of their ancestors. It will make you question HOW an African tribe knows and talks about Sirious. And even more important their knowledge of the hidden star SIRIUS B, knowledge preceding modern science! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did...

The mysterious knowledge of the Dogon tribe of Mali come to life in Scranton's work. How is it possible an ancient people knew of the Sirius star system long before modern tools/technology existed? Laird covers this mystery and many others in his page turning work.

While abed with that cough everyone had in February, I couldn't do much but watch Netflix and Hulu Plus, where I found a short but startling series called "The Pyramid Code." Now, I've always hated the Von Danikens and Ancient Aliens Guys because even if their conclusions should somehow happen to be true, they have no sense of what is and what isn't evidence, their arguments are invalid, and they can't make their predicates and subjects agree. Also, I've always felt with Zahi Hawass that to claim that extraterrestrial help was needed to build the Pyramids is to demean HUMAN intelligence. (After all, it was the Stone Age, not the Stupid Age.) But "The Pyramid Code" introduced me to geological, astronomical, mathematical, electrical, and linguistic arguments that were actually ARGUMENTS, and so fact-based they made the orthodox narrative look like fabrication. So, since I was too sick to walk to the library, I ordered this e-book and read it within a few hours, thus enjoying both an immediacy of gratification and a remarkable hypothesis which, true or not, is both entertaining and worth entertaining. I'd recommend it to anyone who prefers their spookiness backed up by facts, not by wild speculation. In fact, this particular hypothesis is always welcome at my gatherings, because he is not only entertaining, but also very civil when hanging out with hypotheses that contradict him.

Gave me a new perspective on our traditions and what we are capable of as a people!

I really enjoyed this book; and how it showed the correlations of many civilizations. I suggest anyone that is curious about the origin of the world;should not hesitate to read this book.

Excellent

important documentation for all to have. Enlightening and highly educational. I would be delighted to see this type of science is integrated into our education system.

From the Inside Flap

Mistakes are painful in the oil and gas business, both financially and physically. Many have been wiped out and forgotten. A statistic in a chart somewhere gathering dust. A distant memory, if remembered at all. However, each has a story to tell. A story of those final moments of life and death. A story that just might save your skin, if you're interested and willing to listen. Within the confusion and chaos of oilfield disasters are valuable lessons from the honorable efforts of great explorers. Great oil men and women dealing with adversity, fighting to survive. This book gives tribute to them. The cause of undesirable oilfield situations is sometimes simple, sometimes complex, but always unforgiving. Often it comes down to one's actions or inaction. Hesitate to shut a job down for safety, men die. Poor communication on location, men die. Neglect to perform the proper calculations, men die. Lack of attention to detail, men die. When the stakes are high, there is little room for error, as will be shown throughout the book when we step into the steel toe boots of others as they deal with oilfield challenges. Learning from the experience of others is a key principle of the Oilfield Survival Series. The philosophy is best summed up with a 2,200-year-old quote from old Latin literature:Â "It is better to learn from the mistakes of others than that others should learn from you."

Oilfield Survival Guide will be standard material for people who work in the industry. It's a true "Survival Guide," with layers of information. Love the book's format - it helps deliver key points and is filled with memorable stories designed to illustrate/underscore those points. It's about time someone in the oil and gas industry wrote a book like this. Money well spent.

This book is a must read for beginners and veterans in the oil and gas industry. Much knowledge can be gained from the detailed accounts, failures, and successes of an ever changing, dynamic field of employment! It is written in a captivating way, and I couldn't put it down. I will personally benefit from it, for the rest of my career !

I wish I had read this 30 years ago. A must for young (and old) who work in the oil patch. The author has done a super job of telling oilfield stories as a teaching tool.

Great stories on the book

great read

a good read.

Great Book! My thanks go out to the author for writing this! Its well written and full of applicable information. Ive worked with the majors and the independents and have experienced both sides of "safety programs". I have no doubt that I will use much of the information in the years to come. This book helps to provide a little perspective as far as safety is concerned. Its also quite funny! Company names and company MENs names have been changed in clever ways. AND tagged "something" high up hole days after running an RBP....lets beat on it!!!!..........classic! This should be required reading for everyone in this industry. Its easy to follow and fairly simple to understand. Thanks again Matthew!

Good narrative on some of the most tragic safety incidences in the industry. Several case studies and scenarios based on experience data provided from freedom of information act add to books credibility. Well referenced material. More fact than opinion. Author has a good grasp of field and office operations and politics. Good representation and history of the state of the oil field safety culture. Great culmination of referenced material and narrative from a real fracker.
