Great Books, by David Denby

Amazon.com Review

David Denby, New York city movie critic and journalist, entered Columbia University in 1991 to take the university's famous course in "Great Books." This is the course that, in preserving the notion of the western canon without apology to multiculturalists and feminists, has been an unlikely focus of America's culture war in recent years. Where other universities have caved in and revised or enlarged the canon, Columbia's course has remained intact. Denby's intention as a writer and protagonist in the culture war was to record the experience and the personal impact of the course. He has produced a cry from the heart in favor of the classics of western civilization, relaying with infectious enthusiasm how literature touched his soul.

From Publishers Weekly

Does a great books canon exist? Left-wing critics denounce the notion of a canon, while right-wingers often use it to assert unquestioned Western supremacy. This superb book suggests an answer. Denby, the film critic for New York magazine, returned to his alma mater, Columbia University, after 30 years to retake the two core curriculum courses, grapple with the world's classics and regenerate his own lapsed reading habit. It is a heartening portrait of (elite) American education and a substantial?sometimes enthralling?read. His teachers are committed pedagogues, the students a diverse (religious faith separates more than does ethnicity) and thoughtful lot. But the students are young, and the book's richest moments are when the mature Denby engages with the texts. Reading the tragedy of Oedipus Rex, he feels anxious, recognizing the ironic truth "[W]hat we avoid, we become." Hobbes's comments on the state of nature lead Denby to muse on insider trading and the time he was mugged. He contrasts Beauvoir's call for female liberty with the "Take Back the Night" antirape march on campus. Denby steps aside to interview academics and analyze the debate about the canon; he acknowledges that white male critics too long ignored the likes of Virginia Woolf, but resolutely argues for the seeking out of all great books, not merely ones that represent excluded groups. Why? Because the "Western classics were at war with each other," and learning to read Hegel and Marx, or the Bible and Nietzsche, is no lesson in indoctrination but the beginning of "an ethically strenuous education" and "a set of bracing intellectual habits." This book is about the experience of reading and thinking about the Great Books, so it is not merely a summary of the Great Books. The author does provide in the front of the book a list of the books in the Great Books courses at Columbia, (1) Literature Humanities and (2) Contemporary Civilization. At the end of the book he provides samples of previous reading lists. The author personalized the experience of reading and thinking about the Great Books. I particularly appreciated how on pages 203-205 (Interlude 5)a professor from Europe expressed disagreement over the use of such a course. The professor's point was that the great books were read in high school in Europe, and therefore was not suitable material for college. The European professor also disparaged the reading skills of American students. The author pointed out that it is exactly because American high schools neglect the Great Books that they should be studied in college, which helps improve the students' reading skills. We really should consider whether all colleges would benefit their students by making a similar Great Books course mandatory. It's a shame the Great Books are not studied in high school.

Note: This review is based on the unabridged audiobook narrated by Ed Asner."Great Books" is itself a great book. The surface plot involves Denby's returning to his alma mater, Columbia University, to revisit (some of) the great books of the Western canon as a middle-aged adult, 30 years after first reading them as a young undergraduate. But this is no superficial treatment focused on frivolities related to going back to school. Instead, Denby goes deep, thus making the book intellectually elevated in a manner which befits the great books (mixed metaphor intended). He covers a sampling of these books and probes them with sensitivity, thereby giving us insights which are often penetrating and profound, and sometimes even rather original. He didn't say so, but I imagine that his professors were pleased. An added plus, which is what makes the book uniquely special, is that we get to see the difference between Denby's response to these books as a mature adult versus his younger formative years. For those of us in our own middle years, Denby thus gives us a sense of what we might gain from returning to these books.I agree with Denby's ultimate conclusion. The primary reason for reading these books isn't that we become trained to (ethnocentrically) value Western culture, but rather that, by wrestling earnestly (and sometimes painfully) with these books, we're stimulated to grow as individuals, but still each on our own path.Last but not least, Ed Asner did a fabulous job of narrating the book, thereby rendering the audiobook perhaps even superior in some ways to the print version. And this is on top of Denby doing a fabulous job of writing the book itself.Needless to say, I highly recommend this book to anyone open to the possibility of growing via encounter with the great books (and great books about the great books).

I also returned to school to take undergraduate English classes as a man in my 40's. My reasons were different than Denby's, and my classes at our state university were not always high quality. I found his book almost like returning to Columbia. He shares the great wisdom and insight of his professors, while including sharp and relevant observations of his own. These "Great Books" are difficult, and having Denby and his professor put them in context is more than a little helpful. The whole post-structuralist movement has, in my opinion, been a trip down a dead-end road and Denby gives great--maybe not original--insight into where these theorists went wrong. He and others who share his views seem to have lost the battle from a 2011 perspective, and we are all worse off because of it.

Denby's THE GREAT BOOKS reads much like his movie reviews in THE NEW YORKER--intelligent, opinionated, and slightly forced, but almost always profitable. GREAT BOOKS recalls his mid-90s attempt to mediate the debate over the Western Literature canon and its place in the academy. He does this by re-enrolling at Columbia and taking the same core courses he had taken 30 years earlier. Although admittedly a liberal, he avoids the victumization syndrome that he believes the heirs of Nietzsche at the university have ironically created on the Left. The Right, however, also err in putting too much confidence in the canon's ability to raise up culture. Having placed himself in the middle, Denby can jab sometimes at the Left (the absurd attack upon Joseph Conrad) and the Right (feminist criticism did create a place at the table for Virginia Wolff). A hidden strength is his philosophical nuggets, such as the point that Kant's goal was to establish a moral philosophy that was absolute yet did not depend on the word of God.

How do you make something unique when the market is already flooded with books that promise you to become better at producing music? Simple. Focus less on the techniques behind a computer chair and far, far more on developing habits that extend far beyond music production. I think this book is selling itself short by its title; it's self-help for the digital age. Before I came across Timothy's books, I constantly kicked myself for not understanding how I'd sit down to create something and instantly hit a creative brick wall. I thought that something must be wrong with me; that maybe I shouldn't be attempting to produce music and just find another hobby. But reading the words in this book AND applying the techniques have yielded nothing but positive results. I spend less time attempting to get my ideas down and the time I do spend is productive. But you HAVE to apply the principles. Without them, the words in this book are just words and that's one thing I immensely respect in the way Jason Timothy chose to write this. It's not wordy at all; it's simple language. It's so easy to start breezing through chapters because he's talking to you, the reader, LIKE A PERSON. You won't find much technical jargon here, but you will find a ton of useful tools regardless.Suffice it to say, this book deserves every bit of the five stars I'm giving as a rating.

I've read a lot of music books. This ranks among the top as far as immediate impact. It changed my approach and thinking. I believe it will help me for years to come.In a single phrase, the book's message is "Just freaking write." The author argues that if you want to be a songwriter/producer the best thing you can do is... write songs! And write them often. He stresses making a habit out of writing and >finishing< songs. The more you do it the better you get at it. Seems like common sense. One other thing I want to mention is his advice on learning songwriting/producing techniques in electronic music. He suggests you keep your learning to bite size nuggets that can be used immediately. Don't overload your mind with information and then expect to remember 1000 pieces of knowledge when you sit down to write. Learn 1 thing, try it/use it. Again, good advice.Overall this is a winner if you're like me and struggle to be productive with songwriting.

This book will help you stop spinning your wheels and actually finish your productions, improve your production skills, and develop your own original sound. It will give you insight into how to make better use of the time you already spend on music and give you ideas for how to find even more time for it. It also has some great tips on the creative and technical aspects of production, including developing melodies, basses and rhythm, and EQ, mixing, compression, reverb, delay, filtering, etc. The author is a successful producer and also includes tips on getting noticed and getting signed to a label. I think that a wider audience of musicians and producers would benefit from the book, not just electronic musicians and DJs.

The ideas and principles in this book have single-handedly gotten me back in the studio and helped turn down the volume on my inner critic that often keeps me from moving forward towards track completion. It reads more like a conversation you might have with a mentor that understands the struggles you are facing and isn't afraid to recount their own mistakes, pitfalls and triumphs as a way to pull you forward. The main takeaway for me is this: make music everyday; avoid distractions; keep finishing tracks--whether they are just for me or for others.

This is an inspiring read and most of it is relevant and applicable to practically any other goal or dream you have. He makes excellent points with tips, tricks, challenges, advice and a little humor. Honest and refreshing as it brings up obstacles that probably all of us face when working towards something. I recommend this if you produce music or you want to. “Your musical heroes are not really heroes, they are arrows pointing in the direction of your own potential.” “You are putting something new into the world.” “Create your own dent in the Universe.”

This is one of the more useful music production guides I've read. Lots of practical tips and tricks for the electronic music producer, but plenty of information for traditional music producers as well. I really enjoyed the anti bullsh*t line throughout the entire book. If you've ever read the book The War of Art (which the author directly references several times) this is like the electronic music producer's natural extension of that book. I will undoubtedly be using a lot of the information in this book fairly immediately, as the author suggests!A few criticisms- I appreciate the dedication to getting into music quickly, without hanging out thinking you aren't ready ahead of time, but I would suggest some level of Music Theory training. The author does mention that he figured out a few block chords and was Off to the Races after that, but I think that little bit was critical for him and he doesn't emphasize that enough. There's a big gap between being a classically trained musician and a a producer who knows some music theory, the latter being pretty easy to obtain. Just a little bit of theory can go a long long way and it helps a lot collaborating with other artists. I recommend the book Music Theory for Computer Musicians as a supplementary text.Another thing I have to mention is there are a bunch of typos in the Kindle version of this book. Not a big deal at all but a bit distracting.Overall this is an amazing body of work and should be quickly read and digested by anyone looking to break some barriers and get yourself going. Loved it!

I read and enjoy steampunk, but sometimes I'm not in the mood, (and expect a young reader might not be in the mood), for lovingly detailed descriptions and world building. You can get page after page of description of some clockwork contraption, or a whole chapter devoted to a tour of a steam powered engine room. That's not what you get here.Reeve is great at broad stroke world building. He creates the London traction city in a chapter or two. He shows us all of the levels, how it works, how people fit into it, and the larger world within which it operates, and he frames all of the major characters within the first 50 pages. After that we are off to the races on a high energy, twisty and marvelously colorful adventure. And this is a marvelous adventure. Our hero is a bit timid but finds the swashbuckler within. Our heroine is tough, smart, resourceful, and on a mission. This is a fine team. Around and through them we meet a memorable cast of colorful and compelling allies and villains. This is ripping stuff. Lots of running, hiding, lurking, escaping, fighting, and derring do. I was a bit surprised by the level of violence, and not cartoon violence, in the story, but that's treated as a serious consequence of dangerous times and this is still, after all, a dystopian world tale. So, I enjoyed this immensely and appreciated the high level of imagination and creative energy that went into building and then convincingly portraying this fascinating world.

I found out about this book after seeing a preview for the movie and doing a bit of research. The idea of a sci-fi adventure/intrigue with moving cities that need to "eat" other cities sounded like it would be a fascinating read.Sadly, I can't say that I found the story to be nearly as compelling as the idea of it. I can't really put a finger on why I'm not enthralled. The idea is there, the action is there, but I guess the characters fall a bit flat for me. I am finding the book interesting, but not strongly and I've already started to lose interest in any of the sequels. It's just missing the magic piece I guess.

The Story-Tom is a junior historian in the city of London. It is a thousand years since humanity almost destroyed itself in a sixty minute war, and now all cities are built on huge traction machines that roll over the earth and snatch up smaller traction cities.Tom is sent down to the guts to look for artifacts after London eats a mining town. While there he is surprised to see his idol, Valentine, head historian and archaeologist of London. Things turn bad when one of the mining town survivors charges Valentine and tries to kill him. Tom runs after the villain, amazed to see that it is a young woman with a scar down the side of her face and a missing eye.Through different means, they both end up expelled from the city and for the first time Tom finds himself on real ground. Together Tom and Hester try to find their way back to London, Hester to finish her murder and Tom just to get home. However, along the journey Tom learns the truth about his idol Valentine and the ugliness of living in a city eat city world. My Thoughts-This book scores points for originality. The idea of an entire city, as big as London, rolling around on traction wheels and getting their supplies by eating up lesser cities and stripping them bare, blows my mind. I honestly would not have been able to picture it if it hadn't been for the movie trailer. Whether it is in any way realistic is another story, but since this is a fantasy/dystopian novel, I'll let it roll.Let's talk about our main characters, there is actually a quad, Tom and Hester and then Katherine (Valentine's daughter) and Bevis (a junior engineer). Tom and Hester are working their way back to London, discovering flying airships and other mini cities along the way. They also learn of the resistance movement against traction cities. Katherine and Bevis both live in London. Katherine is disillusioned by facts she finds out about her father and Bevis knows the secrets of the engineers and the robots and deadly weapon that are being built. Together they try from within London to stop the insane mayor from destroying the world. The plot is full of twists and turns and as a reader I was eager to find out what the world was like that Hester and Tom lived in. It was also interesting to see technology from our current day have such an impact in the future. There is great tension and build up and the ending scenes are full of action. I enjoyed my ride through this novel. However, I felt as if something were missing. Tom and Hester are great characters, but there is nothing very special about them. I wanted there to be something that only Hester or Tom could accomplish that would save the city or world. Some type of hidden hero archetype or unknown skill that surfaces. I needed to feel that this same adventure could not have happened to any other two kids. So, overall I recommend this book for its originality and action and I'm giving it 4 stars!

Maybe I've come to expect too much from the likes of Orson Scott Card. I'm definitely NOT the Young Adult demographic I suppose this book is aimed at, but even if I were, I think I would have found this book uncaptivating. I love the idea, and really look forward to seeing the movie, but this book's treatment of the story felt insipid, lukewarm, unconvincing. If you want to get an idea what the upcoming movie is all about, maybe it's worth $6.I had a really hard time caring about any of the characters. Too many of them - even the apparent main characters - were just tropes and not really developed beyond those tropes. The author has a habit of making a character appear to be somewhat important, and then killing them off rather flippantly, and in a way that shows they were not really that important. After a while, I started thinking "Cool kid. Shouldn't really start rooting for him, because he's probably dead in 20 pages anyway."And nobody really mourned anyone that was killed off. They were just - gone.Without any spoilers, I was also bothered by the sudden character turnarounds several times - I don't think people change their core nature as readily as they were portrayed in this book. "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father prepare to die... oh, we're best friends now." Wait - what?I guess my review boils down to this: if you replaced all the character development in this book, I'd love the story.
