Well, this book is filled with those animation boards from "the morgue". Specifically, these are boards before the clean up process -- before sketchy pencil lines are removed and colours, backgrounds added.The second book in The Archive Series is still a huge thick hardcover with the boards printed gloriously big. Compared to the first volume, every artist is now properly credited to their work. There are a couple of fold-outs which are unnecessary because the art isn't printed across the fold anyway.This book is primarily on the character art and animation. Artists and animators who want to give their characters life, make them act or emote, will gain a lot from this book. This is more so than the first book because here it features a lot of expressions. There's no mistaking how the characters feel or what they are doing just by looking at their expressions and poses.For animation sequences, well, the boards included are actually a mixture of in-sequence and standalone. You'll probably be able to recognise the many memorable scenes, like how Dumbo swings from her mother's trunk (sweet!), when Pinnochio takes his first step or the spaghetti-eating-to-kissing scene (classic!) in The Lady and the Tramp.Plenty of legendary artists are included, like Ub Iwerks, Norm Ferguson, Ben Sharpsteen, Hamilton Luske, Dick Huemer, Grim Natwick, Art Babbitt, Fred Moore, Bill Tytla, Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Milt Kahl, Marc Davis, John Lounsbery, Ward Kimball, Eric Larson, Les Clark, Wolfgang Reitherman, John Sibley, Bill Justice, Clyde Geronimi, Ted Berman, Glen Keane, Andreas Deja, Eric Goldberg, Mark Henn and Tony Bancroft.This is an inspiring book highly recommended to animators.(More pictures are available on my blog. Probably my favorite in the 4 book series. Layouts and Backgrounds is a close second. It's always great to see the original drawings to remind us that these characters only lived on paper and cels. I'd love to see Disney expand this book to cover just the films from each decade. There's plenty of fantastic material in the Disney archives to fill up an encyclopedia's worth of editions. My painting teachers used to disregard animation as an art-form, but this book proves them wrong. The technique, draftsmanship, line quality is outstanding.

My wife has been a lifelong lover of Disney animation. When she was a kid she wanted to be a Disney animator. We have two kids and so she has had to put that dream on hold - but when she opened her birthday presents and saw this was among them in addition to many other Disney books, she started crying. She thinks this book is absolutely beautiful and really allows her to read and become a part of all that Disney animation she has loved for so long. I thoroughly recommend this if you are or have a Disney lover in your life.

I have every single one of the Archive Series books... this is my favorite... such magic, so much priceless information contained withing these drawings and images. Fantastic book for any fan or Animator.

When I saw this book I knew I wanted it. Its filled with drawings many full sized and cleaned up, Ready to be used on a cell from The early shorts through Snow White up to and end with "The Princess and the Frog. This is a must have book for anybody even lightly interested in animation as these drawings in this size can only be seen by Collectors or by going inside Disney vaults. Also the end section is devoted to photos of the Animators themselves, mostly at their desks but a few elsewhere like in the storyboard room

Great for reference, great for inspiration. These are canon in any artist's library.

Beautiful

This is part of a beautiful series documenting the history and progression of 3D animation. My daughter is a 3D animator and having this in her library is something she loves. I loved reading it as well. It is a very well done book and very high quality.

The photo on the cover is just one example of the many beautiful pieces of art that were included in the book. I was amazed to see how many unbelievably gorgeous works of art were included. The image quality was very good. The artist included detailed descriptions of materials and process for every piece. This outstanding book inspired me and helped me understand how to create colorful, emotionally charged mixed media landscapes.

Soraya, has accomplished so much in her newest book. This is my favorite mixed media landscape book to date and I have a lot of mixed media books. I would have said that this book is geared more for the experienced artist, but artists who are learning about technique would do well to have this book to grow into because of the brilliant way Soraya covers subjects. Some of the subjects she covers are, composition. the elements of art, lost and found edges, negative shapes, underpainting, texture effects, and of course multiple mediums. Soraya also is very encouraging in that as artists we are not limited by just one medium, there is so much information and art materials out there and to only use what you feel comfortable with. I couldn't agree with her more, as a self taught artist myself, its taken me a few years and a few different mediums to get to the point where I feel comfortable using different materials. Mixed media is about using your intuition, taking chances and playing, its all so exciting.

It is informative and helpful for those working in mixed media. As a mm artist of some 30 years, there wasn't really anything new in the book that I didn't already know, but it helped me move on from a 'block' in my own work.

This book explores a wide range of creating vibrant landscapes, based on acrylic mediums, but also with other materials to augment it. More of a discussion level than a step-by-step, and therefore, more appropriate for intermediate to advance painters. Also, not a lot of unnecessary filler with same old basic supplies. This is a book for people who already have a lot of supplies, and are looking for additional ways to make use of them.

A truly inspirational reference for landscape painters beautifully illustrated. Highly recommended for beginners to experienced artists. I have her other books and eagerly await the next one. I did not hesitate to pre-order "Contemporary Landscapes in Mixed Media" before it was published and I have been delighted with the book.

As an oil painter whose previous experience with acrylics was limited to base coating canvases, and grumbling over the results of anything else I tried, I have so enjoyed this book. Not only has it inspired me to try all sorts of different acrylics, but other mediums as well. And my efforts have literally paid off, as several of the pieces with which I've experimented have sold. The reason I've given it four stars instead of five, is I'd like to have had better explanations of the process used in creating the examples. The images were wonderful, incidentally. Anyone interested in breaking the mold should try this book!

I Purchased this book to experience the acrylic medium and to find a way to make my paintings more loose in the contemporary style for landscapes. This book full filled all my expectations. I have painted for years in oil and wanted to experience acrylic. Although the steps are not given, for me as an experienced painter I was able to create paintings with the directions she provided. These methods have increased my repertoire for how to paint using different techniques and ideas. I can take this new knowledge and apply many of them to oil painting which is still my medium of choice. I’m throughly enjoying this book and may buy another by this author.

About half to three quarters of the way through the book, many of the example pictures were no longer present. A title would be shown at the bottom of a blank page. Save your money.

I don't usually write a review, but felt compelled being such a big fan of Bear's (you find out in the book that his real name is Edward!). Anyway, this is a very motivational life story about grit, determination, and a man who lives life on the edge. The part explaining how he climbed Mount Everest after coming back from breaking his back in the SAS (British's Special Forces) is especially fascinating. Don't buy into all of the haters out there who claim that Bear is a fake - while many of his "survival" techniques on his MvW show are for entertainment value & shock factor alone, Bear is the real deal and his story proves firsthand just how tough he is, mentally and physically. Keep inspiring people and challenging them to become stronger versions of themselves!

I'm a big fan of watching 'Man v Wild', or other shows with Bear Grylls on TV. The shows themselves are very entertaining, but I didn't know much about the guy who stars in them. When this book came up as an Amazon Daily Deal I thought it was a good opportunity to find out.When I added this to my Goodreads list I was shocked to see that it had rating of over 4 after over 3,000 reviewers. That seems to be exceptional for an autobiography.For me, this book did live up to the high Goodreads rating. It's surprisingly well written and reminded my a lot of Anthony Bourdain in terms of style and sense of humor. Bear Grylls is a very modest guy. He says he is just an average guy with a lot of drive but I would bet not one guy in 10,000 could achieve anything like what he has. While still a student, he qualified for the British Special forces, the SAS. The SAS recruitment STARTS with something like hell week. Their logic is that if you survive that, the special soldering and training is the easy part. Thus Bear qualified for the SAS as a civilian, not coming from the military first. He gives a good account of what some of this qualifying entails, and it's tough, really tough.His military career ended when he broke his back in a parachute accident and spent most of a year in hospital and rehab. So what does he do after that, he climbs Everest! He recounting of this climb was fascinating.I can see how Bear Grylls makes a great motivational speaker. He's a man with incredible drive, passion and determination which you only get a slight glimpse of watching him on TV.4.5 stars overall.

Bear Grylls is my hero and I am a huge fan of his tv show man vs. wild. The beginning of the book started off slow and I was not that interested. However, as the book progressed the excitement and suspense built. The more I read, the more I wanted to continue to read. The life lessons I learned from this book and this man's life I have taken to heart. On the surface it is a story of love and adventure. But it is also a story of pain, suffering, fear, and depression. By surviving his nearly fatal skydiving accident, by surviving SAS selection, by surviving school and college, by surviving mount everest, by surviving the death of his dearly beloved father, and all the other pain that he has gone through. He survived it all and found happiness, peace, joy, and liberation somehow, someway. He found his inner strength with the help of his lovely wife and by having faith in god. The book is more than a life story but the story of the need to be loved, the story of finding your inner strength. and the story of survival.

I have been a Bear Grylls fan for quite a while, so I really enjoyed getting to know a little about Bear's past and how he became the man he is today. The book starts from the beginning starting off with Bear's young life as an inquisitive and playful boy; it discusses his relationships with his family and recalls memories - both good and bad - about his early development. It then continues to discuss his military training, all the hardships and failures. The book does a good job into diving you into his adventures in Everest. Overall, the book does a good job at keeping you entertained and expressing all the life lessons Bear has learned throughout the years.
