Making the Move to K-12 Online Teaching: Research-Based Strategies and Practices

Review

While I have a great deal of experience teaching online as do my colleagues, we are commonly asking ourselves if we are doing the right thing and if there is a better way to teach online.  This book would help to answer some of the questions that our teachers have about teaching strategies as well as reaffirm some of the strategies that they already have in place.   This book would be a huge asset to assist teachers in making the transition from the traditional classroom to the virtual classroom; I could easily develop the curriculum for the workshop around this book.   This book is a must have for all new teachers looking to teach online.   I would definitely highly recommend this to all new teachers; I would also highly recommend this for veteran online teachers as well.    Bradley R. Mitchell, Training Coordinator, South Carolina Virtual School Program – SC Department of Ed, Columbia, South Carolina      "YES! I would recommend the book to teachers who are just beginning online instruction or those who are considering online as an option.  I think it would be a great [resource] for university schools of education as part of their teacher preparation programs [as well]." -Elmer Seward, Supervisor of Instruction and Professional Development, Virtual Virginia, Norfolk, VA

Kerry Rice Making the Move to K-12 Online Teaching: Research-Based Strategies and Practices     Unique in its focus on K-12 learning, this book shows educators how to transform their teaching as they move from traditional face-to-face classrooms to online settings. Taking into account what teachers know about effective traditional classrooms, Kerry Rice guides the reader step by step through the change showing how familiar concepts, such as setting the tone, building community, course design, lesson planning and assessment, must be re-examined in the context of the online classroom. With the simple premise that teachers need practical information to move beyond traditional practices, it provides an overview of the key principles of effective online instruction, emphasizes the power of the learner-centered approach, and discusses the technology tools that make online delivery and design possible.  Filled with checklists, guidelines, vignettes and sample lessons, the book guides educators through the changing landscape of education as they make the move to K-12 online teaching.      "YES! I use this book in a university class I teach to Education undergraduates, and overall, it is excellent.I have the electronic version, which I read on my computer, and I am glad I got this version, as it allows me to search for terms throughout the book quickly. I don't read it on a Kindle, so i don't have the problems others mentioned; it shows up fine on my screen. The strengths of this book:- Tables! Lots of tables! While I thought a few of the tables ended up confusing the issue more than clarifying, most of the time the tables really crystallized the issues being discussed, and were a great study resource for my students.- Research. Overall, this book is on solid ground, research-wise, and most of the claims made are backed up by evidence. (The education world needs more of this IMHO.)- Organization. The book is extremely well organized. Topics are divided appropriately and discussed adequately.-Tone. While being formal in tone, it was also easy to read, which my students really appreciated. The main weaknesses are:-Early grades. There is not enough emphasis on teaching to K-5, which is HALF of the range stated in the title. Most activities and such in the book assume that the students involved can fluently read, type, and work independently. Teaching online to the elementary levels requires facilitators on the student end, and more use of videos, synchronous technology, and so on, than would be necessary for the older grades. This is only mentioned in passing in a few places, rather than being an integral part of the online elementary teacher's strategy.-Teaching method. The book conflates "online learning" with "student-centered learning." It is possible to use other teaching methods online, whether teacher-centered or some happy medium. The author's preference is obviously for student-centered learning, but this approach, ironically, may not be appropriate for all students (or topics). For one of the assignments in my class, I have my students develop an online lesson based on Gagné's Nine Events of Teaching, which is a teacher-centered approach, and it works well. (I also have them develop lessons using student-centered approaches.) There are many approaches and methods possible in online education.-Learning styles. There's a big controversy about this, I realize, but I'm with Daniel Willingham on this one. There's no scientific evidence for "learning styles." This doesn't mean teachers shouldn't differentiate instruction, but let's stop appealing to "learning styles" in education textbooks!

I bought this book last summer, good book, good info. What befuddles me is how Pearson did this e-book. They simply made digital scans of the print. Consequently, you cannot view this on a regular Kindle. I bought this for use on my ipad and Mac, so ok there... but now I just bought a Kindle paperwhite and cannot read the book on it because it is essentially a giant pdf. This actually made even the ipad edition hard to read. I get that there are a lot of tables and such in the text, but the page fidelity makes the digital version hard to read. Moral ofthe story, buy the print version. They do mention this in the fine print, but you don't realize what a pain it is. Good thing I have an iPad and a Kindle.

While the content of the book itself was good, the quality of the paper used in its printing was poor in quality. As a result of thin, low quality paper, much of the printing on the other side of the page bleeds through -- making it quite difficult/distracting to read (the darker, off-white background of the pages don't help readability either!). Disappointing as I have used Pearson texts in my classroom before (and also as a college student) and have not had this issue.

I was very satisfied with the condition of the used book. I am using the book to learn how to teach students online.

This is a good class book. It's great for the classroom teacher in the K-12 range. Great book for the money.

One of the great things I like about this book is at the end of each chapter. There are planned activities to reinforce topics covered in the chapters and lots of links for supplemental studies.

This textbook was really helpful in understanding how to design and plan an online course. I appreciated having activities at the end to apply what I've learned

Excellent resource for anyone considering moving their instruction online.
