Review

“His newest book has turned some of his perennial critics into fans, at least temporarily. In Did Jesus Exist?: The Historical Argument for Jesus of Nazareth, Ehrman decimates the persistent arguments of those who not only deny the divinity of Jesus but insist that no such man ever even existed.” (Christian Science Monitor)

I’ve had a life-long fascination with the origins of Christianity. In the last few years, I’ve been leaning towards the mythicist position particularly after reading books by Richard Carrier and Derek Murphy and listening to podcasts and videos featuring Richard Price. I found Carrier’s premise concerning the likely origins of the Jesus character and his attempt to use Bayesian analysis to estimate the likelihood of an historic figure intriguing. But an episode of a long time favorite podcast several months encouraged me to closely at my position so I turned to Bart Ehrman’s book to provide a counterweight. This is not an academic book, intended to provide a rich bounty of references to look up, but a layman’s explanation of why the large majority of historians who study this topic accept an historical Jesus, albeit one who is far from our modern depiction. I appreciated Ehrman’s explanation and he’s made me think about my position more carefully, especially when considering the Nazareth problem and other arguments in favor of an historical figure (an issue that convinced Christopher Hitchens that Jesus existed). And Ehrman’s final conclusion about the irrelevance of an historical Jesus to modern Christianity made me look at my own motivations in promoting the mythical position. As a past member of a humanist group, I was surprised to read Ehrman’s take on the movement and its adherents, but it’s always healthy to see how others view an organization. For me, anyone who effectively causes me to reconsider my position on a topic is worthy of recommendation.

Ehrman is a great writer and a great thinker. He does an excellent job of explaining how he goes about evaluating sources, making inferences about where the text we have came from, and how that leads him to the conclusions he accepts. On these points, the book deserves 5 stars. The problem is how he deals with the so-called "mythicists." People who doubt the historicity of Jesus are not a homogenous group. There are different theories, some of which are quite bad. Others are more carefully considered and deserve to be examined (and if necessary debunked) in detail (Richard Carrier's "On the Historicity of Jesus: Why We Might Have Reason for Doubt" is an example of the latter). Rather than dealing with any of their specific theories, Ehrman groups all of these skeptics together, mocks an occasional argument that he finds particularly ridiculous, and derides all other skeptics as a group by association. He then actually spends an entire chapter speculating about what moral, psychological, and intellectual deficiencies cause these people to take a position that set themselves up to be mocked in such a way.If you read "On the Historicity of Jesus" by Richard Carrier and are looking for a good rebuttal, this might not be the book you are looking for. If you would be happy enough to hear somebody explain why *he* believes in Jesus' historicity and confidently declares that Carrier should be ignored because he is "driven not by historical concerns but by religious ones", then this book is for you. But if you found Carrier's arguments to be at least somewhat compelling and are looking for a strong rebuttal, this book is painfully lacking.

Whether one agrees with the Professor or not on all aspeccts of his findings, it's an excellent presentation of how to methodically come to a historical determination (or maybe plausible estimation) of an event or existence and / activities of an historical person. From a personal perspective, I would have preferred that the author solely presented his view and his historical analysis and then provided his critique concerning other views holding Jesus was mythical. It's much easier to follow someone's logic if they have a single aim. In fact, the argument against the mythists perhaps could have been a repeat book. It was still an excellent historical analysis accompanied by many interesting facts or factual propositions.

I started drifting into a very different mind set that I wanted to challenge, and this book did that for me. Dr. Ehrman gives ample examples of "proof" (as much as can be proved after such a long time) of Jesus' existence. He speaks specifically to group of nay-sayers that gets a little tedious after a while, but it is still worth reading if you would like to be convinced that the man, Jesus, existed. This is not a book to read for spiritual reflection on Jesus as Christ, but only as an historical figure who actually existed on Earth. It paints a very human picture of the man and explores Jesus' beliefs. It rocked my world a little, but it's not worth reading if it doesn't challenge my belief system and make me think a little harder about it and help me understand why I believe it. Dr. Ehrman has other books I would really love to read, but all in good time.
