I have davened with the Artscroll siddur since I became religious almost 9 years ago, and I was looking for a change. The Artscroll is a classic for many good reasons, but I've read most of the commentary already. In the last year or so, I've started to look into more Religious Zionist type works, and they really resonate with me. As I see it, Religious Zionism can be mostly distilled to the following idea: the establishment of the State of Israel was an event that has extremely important implications for Judaism. More generally, we see from this that Judaism (at least in some respects) must tailor itself to the current day. If we only look back at a static Judaism, we lose the significance of what Hashem has done for us in our era and negate the fact that we serve to offer any contribution at all.Why am I saying all of this? Well, I believe that the Koren Sacks Siddur is a siddur for those who believe what I have said above. There is a great importance in Judaism in looking to previous generations for guidance in what to do today, but that doesn't mean we need to live as if we were in those generations. We need to be authentically Jewish, but in today's world. The wonderful translation from Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks is an example of this. The way he translates the davening is quite poetic and gives new and fresh meaning to the words we say every day. His commentary draws on classic sources, but they also draw from more contemporary sources and events as well. I've found the commentary to be quite uplifting and to give insights that I've never seen before. For those of you who have use Artscroll, Koren siddurs have the Hebrew on the left page and English on the right (opposite of Artscroll), so that takes some getting used to. After a couple of days, I was fine. I gave the siddur 4/5 stars because there are a few places where the siddur's nusach is different from the Artscroll, and it really confused me. For example, I was at a bris yesterday, and the last couple of paragraphs simply aren't in the Koren siddur. I'm not sure why that is the case, but it bothered me. In the reviews for the paperback version, some people complained about the font size on the compact size being too small, but I haven't found that to be a problem. The hardcover version actually lays somewhat flat, so you don't always need something to hold the pages down (which is great). All in all, if you're looking to try a new siddur, go for it!

Despite having gone to a Jewish school, I never really understood the complexities behind the architecture of the Siddur. After reading Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sachs’ introduction, I now understand the importance of the structure of prayer as outlined in the siddur. His insite truly has renewed my connection to praying the way our sages have been doing for millennia.I bought the hard cover compact version, which is a perfect size for daily use and travel. I really like how I can hold the siddur with one hand comfortably. The paper is a bit thin and sometimes makes it difficult to turn pages, but it’ll probably become easier with time. The new, original font which is supossed to be outstanding is not so noticeably different from other fonts I have seen in other siddurim.I like that the Hebrew text is on the left page and the English translation is on the right page, normally it is the other way around on other siddurim.

Has great introductory material, notes, and guides on what to do. For those wondering this Siddur isn't transliterated like the Artscroll Seif edition. Not a big deal for me I can read Hebrew. The layout is nice and easy on the eyes. The only feature I don't particularly care for (although not enough to give it a lower rating) is the Koren font. A lot of people say they like it but I actually think it's distracting. I'll get used to it as time goes on.

A+ Koren is the best!

Easy reading

15 year old son loves!

Excellent

I want to comment on one aspect of this Siddur only ,it's Introduction. The Introduction is an introduction to Jewish prayer and it is one of the best I have read on the subject. Rabbi Sacks great intelligence and understanding are presented in a clear and understandable way to the reader. So even if you have a Siddur you have long davvened with and would prefer to stay with it I would get this Siddur for the introduction alone. It is wonderful.I should also say that the commentary throughout is informative and intelligent.

I was a big fan of Phil Collins' in the 80's and 90's, even seeing him perform in Toronto three times (an awesome performer, in case you're wondering). I still enjoy his older music but I admit that I had lost track of what he'd been up to over the past decade or so.With Not Dead Yet Collins' has written a no holds barred look at his life. He starts with his beginnings in England with his family and goes into great detail about his early connections with some famous stars (which totally shocked me), his desire to be on stage and shows his readers where his fear of letting people down stems from. He takes his readers through his early years on stage and in music - both as a child performer and later as part of Genesis and as a solo artist. The book also focuses a lot on his marriages and most especially his children. Going into this book I really didn't know much about his personal life except that he's the father of actress Lily Collins. What I got from this book is a look at a man trying to be a devoted father. While he is often absent from his children's daily lives due to his hectic professional schedule, for the most part, he is quite successful as a dad of five. As a husband? Not so much.As a songwriter Collins' has proven he has the chops to hold his own with the big dogs of music so it should come to no one's surprise that he can write a mean autobiography too. His cheekiness comes through every so often in his writing (which goes hand-in-hand with his awesome cover picture) and readers will get a real feel for Collins as a person. However, as much as it pains me to say this there is, at times, a whiff of conceitedness on his part. He's done a lot, he knows a lot of people so I'm not sure how he could have written this book without being 'showy' but I wanted to acknowledge the wee big of arrogance that peeks through at times. And perhaps that's part and parcel with Collin's brutal honesty with himself and his fans. Throughout the book he opens up about some weighty issues as well as theories surrounding his life. I admit that I went into this book looking for the back story involving his song "In the Air Tonight" and a better look into his personal life. I found this book enlightening regarding his recent personal and professional struggles (of which I knew next to nothing about). And yes, he even sheds some light on the inspirational catalyst of In the Air Tonight. For mega fans of 80's/90's music they'll love the stories involving Genesis and other big name groups of the time. Personally, I found it a little heavy in the naming of 'who played what, on which track and with whom' at times. I was in it for more of the personal look into his life and not who played bass for which recording of a specific song. But that's a personal preference and doesn't influence my rating.Collins' talent as a song writer, percussionist and eventually as a lead singer is known the world over but it was nice to be reminded of all that he has accomplished and struggled with personally as well. He has had some huge moments in his life, with others being more infamous in nature, but he uses this book to tell his story with blatant honesty and heart. He lays everything out for his readers to witness - his sometimes poor decisions, his monumental successes and rise to fame, his regrets and his love for his family. If you're wanting to get to know Phil better, both on and off stage, you'll want to pick up this book.Disclaimer: My sincere thanks to Crown Archetype Books for providing me with a complimentary paperback copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Phil Collins is a curious case. Like his fellow former Genesis bandmate, Steve Hackett, he is grossly underrecognized for his talent and vast contributions to rock music. Unlike Steve Hackett, he is an A++-list star whose name and music is known by nearly all, young and old. Yet, when you ask the average person who Phil Collins is, the association is usually one of his smaltzy ballads or, perhaps as part of Patrick Bateman's 'American Psycho' threesome soundtrack. In a fate arguably worse than Hackett's relative anonymity, he is quite well known - but as a PUNCHLINE. Many people don't even know he was a drummer (and one of the very best in the world, at that!)"Not Dead Yet" is a valiant attempt by Phil to put his reputation back in a proper, respectable light. His resume, achievements and experiences are mindblowing. Understandably, he would like us to remember him thus. After all, he has worked very, VERY hard to earn these things, as will become quite apparent to the reader early on. Phil Collins is no slouch and has an incredible work ethic. As a drummer alone, he has influenced MULTITUDES of musicians, from Neil Peart to Vinnie Paul to Kanye West to Alex Van Halen to Jason Bonham to Mike Portnoy and on and on and on. So if it seems like he is being a bit "braggy" at times, remember where he is coming from and how few people outside the musical sphere have really acknowledged him for his accomplishments.Collins sprinkles plenty of humor and hilarious anecdotes throughout 'Not Dead Yet,' creating a seamless, entertaining journey from his childhood to early career in Genesis to '80s/'90s superstardom to his more recent struggles for the reader that's both informative and bittersweet. No matter how you feel about Phil when you pick up the book, you are almost guaranteed to like him when you finish. There are NO boring momentsThe book is written in a witty, breezy yet informative style and is quite hard to put down. It is easy to see why so many musicians from so many backgrounds (from Brian Eno to Tommy Bolin to Sting to Adele to Eric Clapton to Robert Plant + so so many others) wanted to work with him. In addition to his talent, he has an affable charm, a quick wit and a very open mind with regards to music. He has the ability to laugh at himself and some of his best-known blunders (such as the 1985 Live Aid Led Zeppelin reunion debacle, which he will give a through account of).At the same time, Phil Collins is a formidable perfectionist, perhaps harder on himself than any critic could ever be. He takes his job as a musician very seriously, and you can tell that any missteps such as the Led Zep incident eat at him tremendously. For instance, his finger slips on a piano key during his Live Aid performance of "Against All Odds," which he describes as a "bum note that's heard around the world." But if you YouTube the performance, this "clanger," while perceptible, (especially given his brief 'oh sh!t!' smirk immediately after), is actually pretty subtle and would be easy to miss if you weren't actively listening for it. The performance is positively stunning overall, especially vocally.Another aspect of the book I really liked is that Phil focuses more on his musical career than on his personal life. Many musicians gloss over the actual nuts and bolts of their craft in favor of maximizing the salacious "sex, drugs & rock'n'roll" bits for gossip-inclined readers, but Phil is a musician first and foremost. Because he is such an entertaining narrator, this is by no means boring (I split my sides at the mental image of PC stripping down to his "graying Y-fronts" and diving into Peter Gabriel's parents' fancy swimming pool during his 1970 Genesis audition). Even if you already know everything about his career, you are sure to love the great stories he has to tell along the way.I highly, HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone. Regardless of whether you are a Phil Collins fan or not, you are sure to love his story and gain new respect for this man, his career, and the multitudes of musicians he has touched.

Phil Collins is not afraid of the truth, even if, as he states, it's HIS truth. This engaging read is his story in his words. He tells it honestly. I found the tale fascinating. It was sometimes difficult to follow the story line because he knew/knows everyone and he knew them before they became who they are today. So the story can bounce around a bit. But that doesn't make it any less readable. He is a true star and this book is worth the time spent reading it.

Who am I, a nobody writing a review of the work of a somebody? And not just any somebody, one of only three musicians in the world to sell 100 million records.Well, if anyone places their work for sale in the public arena, they are fair game for criticism, so here is mine.Mr Collins is talented in many disciplines, but it has to be said; writing is not one of them. He does deserve credit however for writing it himself, something a number of celebrities cannot claim credit for. His prose doesn’t flow. One has the feeling that he has chosen phrases he has heard or seen in other publications. He lacks education, and so-what to that, but it does show in his writing. This is one publication that can be scanned without losing comprehension. I found that I could read every fifth line and not lose meaning.I really enjoy Phil Collins music. I always saw him as a non-affected fellow Londoner who made good. But a very different Phil Collins comes through in his book. The book and the person don’t gel. The literal Collins is a hard-done-by victim. Shy, retiring not being recognized for the talent which he believes he has.I have a very high regard for Phil Collins as a musical phenomenon. I really enjoy his music and have done for many years. I wish I hadn’t read his book because a very different person comes through his convoluted phrases.

#16,674 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I loved this first book in the Bilbury series. It's a fictional telling of the first year of a doctor who arrives fresh from medical school to a small village in Devon to take over the practice of the aging Dr. Brownlow. The stories of the villagers and the patients are delightful -- funny and warm and engaging. If you're a fan of James Herriot, Gervase Phinn or Lillian Beckwith, you'll love this book.Having said that, I stopped reading after the third book in the series. By the second book, the doctor has been forced to close his practice, but he and his new wife remain in the village and he becomes an author. I have to say I lost interest, because the stories about the villagers started to become long and tedious (cricket matches and village talent shows) and lacked the warmth of the stories between doctor and patient. In addition, the characters and settings became too one-note: country folk, good; city folk, bad. Countryside, delightful; city, dirty. When the doctor and his wife go to London for a day, they're bored and can't wait to get home. What?!? That was pretty much the end for me. Imagine... being bored in London.

WONDERFUL book, wonderful guy. The book has keen observations on human nature, is chock full of memorable people and events, all filtered through the doctor's youthful but canny and empathetic eye. LOTS of wit and laugh out loud moments. The book is written in a simple, direct style. ***MILD SPOILERS FOLLOW*** Style-wise it would be appropriate for older children, except that it's NOT, due to some sexual innuendo (i.e., a cougar, infidelity), unsavory behavior on the part of adults (lying, cheating), and some disturbing incidents that might be too upsetting for kids. But Coleman surveys all with a philosophical eye and weaves a tale that is ultimately heartwarming and uplifting. He brings life in a country hamlet and its colorful residents to life- we discover it right along with him. Both matters of life and death and the small particulars of life are vividly yet simply described, interwoven. Absorbing from beginning to end- WHAT will happen NEXT? I read it to my mom, who has dementia- she loved it as much as I did. Highly recommended!

For its genre, this was a well-written novel about the trials, tribulations and joys of becoming a country doctor. Set in the mid-20th century in Devon, a newly qualified physician lands in a far-flung, rural English village full of quirky but lovable folks. His slightly sterile, London training in an equally well-managed teaching hospital has not prepared him for the demands and generousityies of the people who will wreak havoc with all the myths about becoming a gentleman country doctor. Many of the scenarios are comical, sad, absurd and often just plain mundane. But the young doctor jumps into his new apprenticeship with verve, fear, doubt and love. All the while, the reader has to appreciate the doctor's desire to please and learn, as he gradually sloughs off his past, city chic and becomes very comfortable living above the pub; at the bedside of a dying hobo; in cahoots with the local gofer; getting to know the transvestite local cop; solving mysterious health issues; and gaining the respect of the townspeople and his mentor, who bestows on him the means and ways to survive and come to love country doctoring. This book, the first in a series, will pull the reader into the fast-paced plots and entertaining lifestyle of a wee town, where everyone knows everyone else's business and comes to the aid of one another, in times of crisis and joy. For example, what could be more entertaining than delivering a baby in an open field, as the skies pour down and as sheep and cows become part of the birthing procedure, much to the delight and carefreeness of the new mother and her neighbors, who are there to assist in the arrival of the wee child. For a entertaining but earthy read, this first book in a series is for you.

I thoroughly love this book, though I am an American :) I didn't need any explanations of the humor in it.I have bought Books 1 to 4 so far, and have read 1 2 and 3. I buy the next one when I am perilously close to the end of the last one. These books are treasures. I wish a TV show (that Americans can watch) would be made of these Young Country Doctor Books.I have made a Vernon Coleman collection on my Kindle and I will read these again. Over and over I would imagine.Fun, witty, surprising...and heart warming when he describes Bilbury Grange and the town, and also the animals who make their home at Bilbury Grange. Oh and the gardens..yes.I hope Mr. Coleman continues the series.

What can I say about this book? First, it is incredibly well-written and well edited. If there is one typo in it, I missed it, and typos generally stand out as if they were written in red.The descriptions of the village as well as the people made me feel that I was living in the village and enjoying both the scenery and the camaraderie of this special place. The author's style is reminiscent of Jan Karon's Mitford series. The description of everyday events and the quirkiness of the characters is such an unexpected treasure.I know that this is part of a series, and I don't know how, but I intend to read and savor every one of his delightful books!

I really enjoyed this book. I read it aloud to my 85 year old father and we liked it so much that I have purchased all the other books in the Bilbury series. I'm looking forward to starting to read the next book to Dad as soon as possible. I stay really busy and it's hard to find time sometimes, but this one was definitely worth making time for it. We laughed and had tears in our eyes at times, too. There's no problems with language or scenes you wouldn't want to have to read aloud, either. Good, clean fun!

I enjoyed this book., coming from a small country town myself I could place some attitudes and the way pole will put out there hands to help others., the stories of his patients took us from comedy to tears as events took place.,, he writes well and I felt part of the community and was sorry when the book ended., I M Now about to start the second book in the series..
