I loved this first book in the Bilbury series. It's a fictional telling of the first year of a doctor who arrives fresh from medical school to a small village in Devon to take over the practice of the aging Dr. Brownlow. The stories of the villagers and the patients are delightful -- funny and warm and engaging. If you're a fan of James Herriot, Gervase Phinn or Lillian Beckwith, you'll love this book.Having said that, I stopped reading after the third book in the series. By the second book, the doctor has been forced to close his practice, but he and his new wife remain in the village and he becomes an author. I have to say I lost interest, because the stories about the villagers started to become long and tedious (cricket matches and village talent shows) and lacked the warmth of the stories between doctor and patient. In addition, the characters and settings became too one-note: country folk, good; city folk, bad. Countryside, delightful; city, dirty. When the doctor and his wife go to London for a day, they're bored and can't wait to get home. What?!? That was pretty much the end for me. Imagine... being bored in London.

WONDERFUL book, wonderful guy. The book has keen observations on human nature, is chock full of memorable people and events, all filtered through the doctor's youthful but canny and empathetic eye. LOTS of wit and laugh out loud moments. The book is written in a simple, direct style. ***MILD SPOILERS FOLLOW*** Style-wise it would be appropriate for older children, except that it's NOT, due to some sexual innuendo (i.e., a cougar, infidelity), unsavory behavior on the part of adults (lying, cheating), and some disturbing incidents that might be too upsetting for kids. But Coleman surveys all with a philosophical eye and weaves a tale that is ultimately heartwarming and uplifting. He brings life in a country hamlet and its colorful residents to life- we discover it right along with him. Both matters of life and death and the small particulars of life are vividly yet simply described, interwoven. Absorbing from beginning to end- WHAT will happen NEXT? I read it to my mom, who has dementia- she loved it as much as I did. Highly recommended!

For its genre, this was a well-written novel about the trials, tribulations and joys of becoming a country doctor. Set in the mid-20th century in Devon, a newly qualified physician lands in a far-flung, rural English village full of quirky but lovable folks. His slightly sterile, London training in an equally well-managed teaching hospital has not prepared him for the demands and generousityies of the people who will wreak havoc with all the myths about becoming a gentleman country doctor. Many of the scenarios are comical, sad, absurd and often just plain mundane. But the young doctor jumps into his new apprenticeship with verve, fear, doubt and love. All the while, the reader has to appreciate the doctor's desire to please and learn, as he gradually sloughs off his past, city chic and becomes very comfortable living above the pub; at the bedside of a dying hobo; in cahoots with the local gofer; getting to know the transvestite local cop; solving mysterious health issues; and gaining the respect of the townspeople and his mentor, who bestows on him the means and ways to survive and come to love country doctoring. This book, the first in a series, will pull the reader into the fast-paced plots and entertaining lifestyle of a wee town, where everyone knows everyone else's business and comes to the aid of one another, in times of crisis and joy. For example, what could be more entertaining than delivering a baby in an open field, as the skies pour down and as sheep and cows become part of the birthing procedure, much to the delight and carefreeness of the new mother and her neighbors, who are there to assist in the arrival of the wee child. For a entertaining but earthy read, this first book in a series is for you.

I thoroughly love this book, though I am an American :) I didn't need any explanations of the humor in it.I have bought Books 1 to 4 so far, and have read 1 2 and 3. I buy the next one when I am perilously close to the end of the last one. These books are treasures. I wish a TV show (that Americans can watch) would be made of these Young Country Doctor Books.I have made a Vernon Coleman collection on my Kindle and I will read these again. Over and over I would imagine.Fun, witty, surprising...and heart warming when he describes Bilbury Grange and the town, and also the animals who make their home at Bilbury Grange. Oh and the gardens..yes.I hope Mr. Coleman continues the series.

What can I say about this book? First, it is incredibly well-written and well edited. If there is one typo in it, I missed it, and typos generally stand out as if they were written in red.The descriptions of the village as well as the people made me feel that I was living in the village and enjoying both the scenery and the camaraderie of this special place. The author's style is reminiscent of Jan Karon's Mitford series. The description of everyday events and the quirkiness of the characters is such an unexpected treasure.I know that this is part of a series, and I don't know how, but I intend to read and savor every one of his delightful books!

I really enjoyed this book. I read it aloud to my 85 year old father and we liked it so much that I have purchased all the other books in the Bilbury series. I'm looking forward to starting to read the next book to Dad as soon as possible. I stay really busy and it's hard to find time sometimes, but this one was definitely worth making time for it. We laughed and had tears in our eyes at times, too. There's no problems with language or scenes you wouldn't want to have to read aloud, either. Good, clean fun!

I enjoyed this book., coming from a small country town myself I could place some attitudes and the way pole will put out there hands to help others., the stories of his patients took us from comedy to tears as events took place.,, he writes well and I felt part of the community and was sorry when the book ended., I M Now about to start the second book in the series..
