About the Author

Ben Witherington III (PhD, University of Durham) is Jean R. Amos Professor of New Testament for Doctoral Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary. A prominent evangelical scholar, he is also on the doctoral faculty at St. Andrews University in Scotland. Witherington has written over forty books, including The Jesus Quest and The Paul Quest, both of which were selected as top biblical studies works by Christianity Today. His other works include The Indelible Image, Women and the Genesis of Christianity, The Gospel Code, A Week in the Life of Corinth and commentaries on the entire New Testament. He also writes for many church and scholarly publications and is a frequent contributor to Patheos and Beliefnet. Witherington is an elected member of the prestigious Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas, a society dedicated to New Testament studies. He is a John Wesley Fellow for Life, a research fellow at Cambridge University and a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Society of Biblical Literature, Society for the Study of the New Testament and the Institute for Biblical Research. He previously taught at institutions like Ashland Theological Seminary, Vanderbilt University, Duke Divinity School and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. The Trilogy is a masterpiece for the aggressive God seeker. Individually, the volumes are superb; however only in the set do you get the grit and substance of the range and amplitude of the earliest churches in time and place, and among specifically Jewish temple Christians & `distant' Gentile grafts back in to the vine of God's grace.The "Letters and Homilies" under Witherington's masterful intellect describe the churches of men struggling to comprehend the unified essence of Jesus teachings to accomplish the one Church of Christ. The cultural chasms among the new believers have been underappreciated in our own time. In one generation, individuals of fierce cultural differences are witnessed to become unified under the one ideal of Christianity. There is no modern parallel to look back upon to compare the magnitude of the attraction to Jesus `cult' that lives on to this day.As to the trilogy, a straight through read is simply too daunting I think. I took a year and a half to complete the 3. Reading the entire trilogy is a different experience then the individual books. After thinking through it, the Witherington's approach to consider the specific natures of the audiences that heard these letters is profound. In total, the multi-authored Jesus message is amazingly and consistently coherent as the tiller of Christian ideals. The NT will never be the same to me after this slice from Witherington. I can hear a verse, and I can recall the context, the visuals, and sometimes the smells of the original as it was spoken.As individual books, they are an effective commentary of great depth. A negative is that for some passages, the commentary feels pedantic for lack of a better word. Not every verse is spring loaded for meaning. Witherington is a main stream Protestant church theologian. He leans towards analogy over literal interpretations. The reader will recognize this departures from your own theological understanding and you will decide veracity as you will. There's no `rapture' theology with Witherington. There is high order translation skill given Witherington's application of state of the art increasing knowledge of 1st century Greek in context.

Ben Witherington's series of socio-rhetorical commentaries on Paul's letters to early Christians has only recently been discovered by me. It would not have occurred to me to group these particular letters together from a socio-rhetorical standpoint but Prof Witherington's work sheds a whole new light on matters for me. This series is well worth considering whether for formal study or simply personal research purposes

Excellent commentary. Dr. Witherington sours once again. I am intrigued by Dr. Witherington calling the General Letters "homilies." I'm preaching through James right now and am finding this commentary very helpful. Highly recommend this book and others by him.

From an evangelical pastor's perspective, I have to say that Ben Witherington III has to be one of the most interesting Bible scholars alive today. He is fairly conservative, and he grapples with the text in intelligent, informed, and logical ways. He asks the right questions, an area in which many commentators fail.Witherington brings in the Jewish context, the Graeco-Roman context, and adds rhetorical insights. Although I sometimes disagree with him (I believe in Sovereign Grace and embrace views even more conservative than his), Witherington is my favorite resource after the text itself.

This volume joins “Letters and Homilies for Hellenized Christians” Volumes 1 and 2 for Witherington’s three-volume set that covers the General Epistles including the Pastorals, Epistles of John and of Peter, and in this volume, Hebrews, James, and Jude. I always marvel at his output as he has written on most of the NT and other subjects as well.Having reviewed the other two volumes, I feel he keeps up his standard of work here. He keeps that socio-rhetorical emphasis that he is famous for as well. I can’t always agree with his conclusions, but they are never uninteresting.He deals with Hebrews first. He summarizes the different viewpoints on authorship well (he favors Apollos) and rightfully emphasizes Christology to good effect. He sees Hebrews as a rhetorical masterpiece and I agree. His commentary, though I would disagree at points, was helpful.I chuckle at how he writes his Introductions for each book because he approaches them in a different order each time and just seems to start at random. Still, he gets it covered each time.Next, he tackles James. As you might imagine with his emphases, he writes on the “social ethos of James’s audience and home congregation” with good food for thought. I found his thoughts on Jude even better.This is a quality commentary of the acedemic type and I recommend it.I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

The writer has completely missed the point of what it means to be a follower of Christ. Yet another example of academia over a relationship.

I met Paul Dunn this past August and he blew my mind. Not only did he inspire me to rewrite the proposals we use in our business, he inspired me to bring him to Madison to speak to our business community. As I read this book recently, my eyes were opened as to what is possible in the world that was based on the billable hour. Now when a prospect says "That's over 650/hr!" I know exactly what to say. Now when someone says I only want to work with the owner of the firm, I know exactly what to say. And more important even than those is the fact that I have learned my place as the owner of a service based professional business. Not to "do the work" but to inspire a great team to provide explicit value to our customer community. If you are in the services and don't read this book, you're simply not paying attention to the value you can provide to your market.

I am a mere law student right now so my opinion can't be informed by years of practicing the principles in this book. Still, I think this should be required reading at every law school. That's a cliche statement but I mean it. Having worked for 10+ years before coming to law school, I have to say I found the billable hour to be obscene when I first encountered it. It just makes no business sense. I am amazed that clients have agreed to it for as long as they have. I bought this as an affordable option to the CD version of planet sounds. I listened to snippets of these recordings elsewhere and was entranced. I thought, what an awesome background for meditation! Being into the woo-woo, I could select planet sounds for meditation based on what I wanted to accomplish. VERY COOL.Well, since the tracks are merely numbered instead of named, there's no way to tell what planet is which.I had never purchased an audible file before, and I was bothered by the DRM and need for special programs or to use a browser-based option to listen and the requirement to install the audio manager on my computer. If I were using the audible service for something else, it would be a non-issue but I would not recommend it for a single purchase as there are too many hoops to jump through.Also while it's not the end of the world, I agree with the other review that the "audible" announcement at the beginning does not add to the value of this purchase.

Note that NASA had nothing to do with these recordings. The original version of these were produced by a chiropractor, Jeffrey Thompson, who was interested in marketing "therapeutic audio" through his company Brain/Mind Research. He obtained recordings that were publicly available from the Voyager PWS (plasma wave) researchers, and some of these were likely mixed into his products. However, the final results sound essentially nothing like the original natural signals. Of course there is nothing wrong with using these public domain data in creative works, but it was more than a little misleading to suggest that they represented the unmodified Voyager plasma wave recordings.A complete set of the natural Voyager data converted to audio files is available on the web from the PWS research team at The University of Iowa. The unmodified Voyager audio occurs in 48-second segments that are quite a challenge to sift through to find interesting bits. The natural audio tends to be far less interesting, less soothing, and less marketable than these products.There's nothing wrong with these creative works, inspired by and maybe even containing some of our plasma wave data, but, no, the planets do not emit meditation music.

I enjoyed the simplicity of the format. Each section is outlined by speaking of a specific problem, the proposed change, what would happen if you don't do it and what would happen if you do do it. However, the suggestions are ones that many have likely tried before attempting to find a personal self help book. The suggestions are things like taking a walk in the morning, reflecting on why you were thinking negatively, etc. The changes proposed are simple in the extreme but don't cover exactly how to ensure consistency of keeping the change. I gave it three stars because the book tells you what to do but not necessarily how to do it and stay consistent with it. In addition the book focuses mainly on making these changes to an office/working environment which I currently am not in.

The habits presented by the author are doable. The book is easy to read and to understand. I think this book could be a keeper to transform any life experiencing some negative challenges like mine. Good book!

This is the worst book ever created. It's riddled with spelling and grammatical errors from the start, just look at the table of contents. It is an online downloadable guide that was turned into a book. I left this book on my shelf for a month thinking it would help me uncover some newfound knowledge when I needed it. When I finally picked it up to read it the content was unbearably dumb. Needless to say I threw it halfway across the room in rage and came here to right a review.This book is great if you're a potato otherwise save your money. No book can tell you how to be and live positive, and specially not one full of suggestions a 5 year old could have told you.

Stark, nicknamed "Stick", was born without an ear, and he's been teased about his missing ear his whole life. Bosten is his only defender, and their neighbor Emily is Stick's only friend. Bosten is also gay, which Stick only learns when he catches Bosten and his friend Paul together. That doesn't matter to Stick, who loves his brother, but it matters a lot to his rigid parents. (The historical setting of this book is never specified, but based on the music, drugs, and cars mentioned, I would assume the setting is 1970s). The boys have an ally in their Aunt Dahlia, but she lives in distant Southern California. When Bosten finally runs away after an epic fight with their father, Stick takes their father's car and runs after him.This is a hard book to read, primarily due to the horrific abuse that the two main characters endure at the hands of their parents. But as usual with Andrew Smith's books, the main characters are vibrant and lovable. My major criticism has to do with the plot--the second half of the story felt rushed and entirely too dependent on lucky chance. Not to mention, it strained my credulity that the same controlling parents who had rules about hair length, underwear, and what could or could not be said to a neighbor were just going to let Stark get away with taking his father's car and moving in with Aunt Dahlia. Sorry, but I really wasn't buying that one bit.

This book was banned from the reading shelf at a public school near Portland, Oregon. I'm a former teacher and I don't understand why. This book suddenly made me understand what some of my childhood friends had gone through living in disfunctional homes. No one knows the horrors that go on in other people's homes. But, it's time we start those discussions and it's also time start paying attention to those who are suffering in the silence of their personal hells. It really is time to do something to stop the circle of childhood abuse. It's past time for the village to start caring for all our children. Look around, it's there. This book is a fantastic starting point for that discussion. It broke my heart to now know.

I wanted him to love.This is a tale of the ugliest and most beautiful moments in life wrapped up in one 13 year old boy, and it's incredible.Everyone should read this book, it's life-altering.

I really thought I was going to DNF this at 15%. I've NEVER DNF-ed a book just for being too much. And I've read my share of too much. In truth, what Stick and Bosten went through, the abuse and the violence that went on inside and outside that house, usually puts me off. Because more often than not, I feel like I'm being emotionally manipulated into crying (I'm looking at you, Reason to Breathe). But placing this in the context of a deformed thirteen year old boy dealing with the complexity of puberty and the terrifying changes that comes with it, layered with the simplicity of his relationship with his brother... It worked.The first half of Stick portrayed the lives of the McClellan brothers in Point No Point, Washington through the eyes of Stark "Stick" McClellan and his brother Bosten. Stick has one ear, one best friend (Emily) and a lot of abuse thrown his way. His brother, Bosten keep the wolves in school at bay but when they're home, there's no one between them, their parents and St. Fillan's Room. Their father may have beaten them into believing they are less than who they are, that this was the norm in every household, but they still got each other.The second half deals with the aftermath of Bosten running away from home after their father found out that he's gay. Stick embarks on a lonesome roadtrip as he tracks his brother back to California, the place where they learned that kindness and love didn't come with rules and punishments through their Aunt Dahlia.I may have to admit into liking the first half better than the last despite the persistent twig branch I had in my eye while reading through it. I felt the narrative flowed, tension was evenly spaced and Stick's sexual awakening provided simultaneous charm and entertainment reminiscent of Ryan Dean in Winger. I always get a massive feels erection with stories reflecting relationships with brothers. Romantic and erotic relationships feel very pedestrian and easy but translating the depth and texture of that bond between brothers while displaying each as a person distinct from the other? It takes a very tempered hand to get that right, I feel.Not to sell this one short on the romance because I found his and Emily's moments delightful in their innocence, warming the corners of my heart that have been frozen by their horrible parents. There came a point it became impossible to ignore anymore.These were small issues I had with the book, but what cost this book my esteem was the idea of Aunt Dahlia coming across too Poppins-esque, I think I was bothered by that, more than her turning up out of nowhere in their lives after having suffered so much. I like the imperfect and uneven edges in my books, the splinters make them more acceptable as realistic fiction. Aunt Dahlia just felt too smooth and California was just too much of a perfect yang to Washington's yin.Stick is a tough book, yes, but I find myself drawn to these kinds of stories, pushing my boundaries and expanding my horizons as a reader. I'm going to step over my boundaries and aggressively push this to anyone who has read and liked or disliked Reason to Breathe.They drive different messages across but they intersect at certain points. The chemistry between Roux and Ben could not be denied. Whenever she was in his vicinity, he felt her. Her father had the presence of mind to provide for her even though his hateful, greedy wife tried everything she could to rid the world of both mother and child. This story was so different than most that I've read, though it was a true romance novel. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the characters. The morality of Teze blew me away. George and his crew were exactly whom I thought they would be. Overall, this book was amazing.

A classic love story with a “feel good” vibe. Love the nod to Octavia Butler with the sci-fi component. Reminded me of Kindred a bit. Keep writing because sis- you can write!

This was a really good book. The premise was something that was new to me. Been has been living a pretty decent life as a journalist. Something major happens in his life and he ends up going with a photographer to find a woman who some day I'd a ghost and others say is cursed. He doesn't believe it at first but he finds her. Her name is Roux and she is not what he thoughte. This idea of her being other worldly makes everything about this book seem like something new. It doesn't feel like your typical romance though there are familiar elements in the book. This is a great read and you should definitely give this unique story a chance.

I loved this book! It was different but not really different. It was really good. The story grips you in and keeps you. I could not put it down. I loved Roux's straightforwardness and her ability to handle herself. And I loved her pets. Ben, poor sweet Ben, fell hopelessly in love. He seemed halfway in love with her before he'd even laid eyes on her. I really enjoyed it.

This story caught me by surprise. Not your conventional love story, though. Vivid descriptions and characters so well developed that you want them as friends. The author crafted a story that will keep you so eager to turn the page but also sad once you realize that you're one page closer to the end. Ms. Walker is an exceptionally talented writer. There are only two love scenes in the entire book - and that's okay. So many in this genre abuse this and what should be a natural expression of a love between a man and a woman turns into an exchange of body fluids in a sordid freak show. Thank you, Ms. Walker for keeping the beauty and mystery in making love. To other IR writers: take note. This is how it is done. I really hated to see this story end. Truly a beautiful story. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Walker in the future.

This was a wonderful story. I love how she got Ben to change his way of thinking. What will he do about his family? Can he go back to the United States with George still lurking? You started rushing the story toward the end. I was scared it wouldn't end. I thought you would make it a two part. I don't care about it being a two part since Ben and Roux are together. When you said book one, I hesitated to read it. I am sick of series, it takes too long to write the sequel. By the time you put the book out, I forgot what the other one was about. Sometimes I have to 're-read the first book. This was really a good book. I wish her mother had told her about her father. What happened to Alvin Jr? Racism will never die.

This story is a slowly evolves, and it keeps the reader's attention, due to its unique characters. I found Roux's character intriguing. I like her innocence and forthrightness balanced with a toughness, all of which work for a character in her circumstances. And Ben's character is an above average guy who is ambitious, intelligent, and introspective (though he could have used a little more..."something}). The other characters are extreme, and at times they are grating on the nerves, because they come across as archetypes, or preachy. There are a few plot holes that raise questions about decisions the characters make (they just didn't make sense), and some sentences are convoluted and could have been revised for clarity. Throughout the novel, the reader journeys with both characters to learn about the past toward surviving the present. Obviously, the author put a lot of effort into this book, and it is evident that she is thoughtful on social and political issues. Thankfully, unlike some authors I've read, she is keenly aware of the nuances of the topics she embraces, and she does so with maturity.

In the beginning I was anxious for the two main characters to meet, but the back story was necessary.There's Ben and there's Roux. Roux is living in isolation somewhere in the Caribbean and Ben hears the myths about her, enticing him to go after the story (he's a journalist and has recently quit his job because of a lack of journalistic freedom). Anyway, he thinks he's going to expose another Tarzan-like story, but instead finds something very different. Love.I thought it was an interesting story, how everything unfolded. The back story again was necessary, but some of the side drama I don't think was. I still had questions about how some of the supporting characters, but for the main characters there was a conclusion and happily ever after.The blue hair thing was weird, but I guess that was for emphasis on the exoticism of Roux, kind of fairy tale with real life aspects. Decent read...keeps your interest piqued.

This is a relatively thin manual that UNFORTUNATELY covers several different model John Deere tractors. Although the content is informative, one has to "read between the lines" to glean the info as it pertains to their tractor. This manual is approximately 3/16 of an inch thick. My shop manual for my 1960 Case 310B is 4 inches thick. Of course, when one looks at a picture on the internet, one CANNOT tell the thickness of the item. So yeah, it's O.K. and better than nothing, but not really worth the outlay of funds.

A wealth of information to keep my tractor running.

Good manual for the price. Does not go into great detail on some things.
