I like most of the arrangements and it's a good collection of most of their big songs. I'm giving it four stars because I love the songs so much and I'm happy to have them in sheet music. However, a few of the arrangements are just piano accompaniment for vocals, and others have places where there is an accompaniment for an instrument, only there’s no music for the instrument. I don't see how that's very smart. What are we supposed to do, write it out? The other thing I don't like about the book is that there are so many repeats and codas and multiple endings that you are flipping all over the place to try to play the whole song. It's very impractical. I probably am going to end up copying a number of pages and pasting them together to get through one song without constantly flipping forward and back.
This is a sheet music version of the famous album anthology put out by The Carpenters. I recommend having the audio version as well as this sheet music. You will want to know exactly how Karen and Richard made this music work so well. Obviously, most of us cannot reproduce what they did. But you won't even come close if you just play the simplified notes here. If you listen carefully you will hear how Karen never sings the notes strictly and you will notice how much richer the keyboard playing is under Richard's hands. You don't need to duplicate it, but you can seek the feel and use the sheet music as a basis for building your own take on this wonderful music. The price is great and the arrangements, even if played as is, are fine for people learning to play and of intermediate experience. However, if you are an experience musician, this is a launching pad for your version of the music. Great to have in your library and for exploring this music of the 1970s and 80s.Whenever I listen to their music and arrangements I realize what a treasure we lost with her passing. So sad.But the music lives on so beautifully and her rich alto voice is always there for us to hear again.
Truly one of the best collections of THE CARPENTERS music out there in one book. I have several of the album's books, but these include some of the newer material released after Karen's death in 1983. Some of the best songs of the 1970s and early 80's here.
Very odd collection. It's a complete jumble of songs from different parts of their career with no apparent organization. Likewise, the arrangements are all over the map. Some of them sound like the originals and are in the right key, but many have simplified arrangements and introductions that don't even resemble the recordings. Very disappointingly, some songs like "I need to be in love" are written as an accompaniment, so the piano doesn't actually play the melody! You would have to have somebody sing along if you want to hear the melody. There are annoying typos too: The song "I kept on loving you" is printed as "I kept loving you"! The original Carpenters Gold collection is much much better but doesn't have any of the later albums, as it only goes up to "A song for you" and doesn't include that song as this collection does.
I love it. The big hits sound really great, with some very nice arrangements. Close to You, Superstar, Rainy Days and Mondays...my faves, and they sound very nice. I like the difficulty...not too easy so that the songs sound so simple, but not so hard that I can't play, with some practice. There are some difficult keys and key changes, so if you're not fond of playing with 4 flats, for example, you might find it difficult.
The songs in this book are the most popular songs that Carpenters did though I am also looking for their version of I'll Never Fall In Love Again.Anyway, if you love to sing,the keys are totally the same as what Karen used. Also the notes are accurate except for other instrument line like guitar, flute, etc.The book comes brand new, no folds, and yes, good smelling (new book smell).Here is a sample of one song I play using this book.[....]
A more advanced music folio than the E-Z one, but this increasing complexity only enhances the beauty of the music. In addition you get access to all of their beautiful music and can feel their talent shining through.
Not all songs are in the recorded key. Why would you want to play Merry Christmas Darling in Bb instead of G? You wouldn’t, but someone at Hal Leonard thought it was a cool idea. How would you know this until opening the book? They need to indicate these sorts of transpositions.
