Recently, I’ve been studying Esther and I am so glad I came across this commentary. Pastor Cain breaks down the scripture line by line, then shows the big picture of how it fits into our lives today.

I never realized God is not mentioned once in Esther. Yet, after reading the God of Great Reversals I am reminded He was and is everywhere in this story and mine. This was such an encouragement for my daily life where God sometimes seems so distant or uninvolved in the small daily everyday stuff. Tim Cain really showed how God orchestrated so much in the behind the scenes story of Esther it left me loving Jesus more and helped me respond to the hard everyday stuff of life that we encounter living in a broken world.

This is a refreshing look at the book of Esther. The book got better with each chapter as I was drawn deeper into the drama, much different than reading on your own. And far superior to the few movies out there on Esther. What a picture of the truth that God is the hero! Also, each chapter ends with powerful reflection on how the story points us to Christ and his work on the cross. I was blown away more than once!

I have read the book of Esther many times, and in all of those readings, I have never ever thought of the significance and display of the Lord's love in that book as Tim Cain presents!Tim Cain has the gift of taking God's Word and explaining it with such detail and right of amount historical information making this book an awesome read as well as studying God's Word.Tim truly has a gift of writing, and insight to the reader's expectation. My wife gave me this book as a gift, and I have not put it down. I am ashamed to say that I used this book as the central material for a course I taught before I read the entire work. To Civitello's credit, the majority of her work IS factual, but as other reviewers have pointed out, there are some GLARING errors. Two of my favorites: the author recounts the tradition of Passover and its foods under the heading "Pyramid-Builder Food". In the eleventh chapter the author claims that the Italian word "ciao" was caused by the presence of American soldiers in Italy during WWII, when poor Italians would beg the soldiers for food only knowing the word "chow" (she cites no source for this strange idea). There is no archeological evidence to support the biblical account of the Jews in Egypt and even if there were, they certainly didn't build pyramids as this practice was stopped long before Ramses ascended the throne. The Italian word "ciao" was used for CENTURIES before WWII. Even appearing in Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms" which was published in 1929, in English (of course). I have found it embarrassing to have to explain these oddities to students while instructing them to avoid inaccuracies in their own work (and avoid choosing a text for a class without reading it thoroughly). Yes, it is an entertaining read but it is too unreliable. Like other reviewers, I'm wondering where the editor has been for the past three editions! Tom Standage's "An Edible History..." Is more accurate but less entertaining with fewer details concerning individual dishes. If you are merely looking for a good bedtime story, by all means buy Civitello's book. If you looking for accurate information, you are better off buying something else!

I would NOT call this book factual. Her dates are all off. In fact, I think it's shameful that anyone teaching a class in any school should ever use this book.Examples:She says that the earliest hominid were found in SPAIN, 12 million years ago. Where in the world did she come up with that date and Spain? The earliest fossil record of humans dates back 7 million years ago in Africa not Spain.Her concept of stone sculptures is off by thousands of years.She says that chiles and squash were cultivated in Mexico 8,000 years ago. According to findings at by the National Academy of Sciences, the earliest cultivation dates of chili is 6,500 years ago.The lima bean is a native of Guatemala, it was traded in ancient cultures but not cultivated until later. Linda Civitello states that it was cultivated in Peru 8,000 years ago.Medieval warm period 950 - 1300 but she neglects to state that the SMALL ICEAGE begins in the 14th century. That temperatures are so severe that crops fall all over Europe for 500 years.She says that foods go Global in 1003 based on the Vikings; however, the food trade dates back thousands of years with hunters and gathers and the cultivation of wheat, barley, fava beans, chickpeas and vegetables and tubers. Early cultivation of numerous fruits came from Asia.This non-factural data is continued throughout this book. As an archaeologist, I don't understand how she was able to get this book published let alone have schools allow her to teach false information. I purchased this book used and it was obvious that it was used in a school classroom because of the extensive underlining. Seeing the underlining of made-up facts that she would use on a quiz was horrifying. I feel sorry for all those students who took her class and future students who read her book.

I ordered this book for my son who needed it for one of his classes in culinary school. I glanced through it and found it to be interesting and full of information I never knew. Now I can't wait to read it when my son is through with it! He is really enjoying the class and the knowledge he"s getting from this book. The book tells you all about different cultures from practically the cave man days through today, the foods ate, and the social, religious, and differentcustoms they practiced. It also explains a lot of myths and beliefs associated with foods.

at the GETTY MUSEUM in LOS ANGELES, i used an audio tour about how food has been served through some earlier centuries. the guest speaker was LINDA CIVITELLO. i was so impressed by her talk that i looked her up to see who she is and if she had written anything accessible. THIS BOOK IS SUCH A WONDERFUL, FRESH WAY TO LEARN ABOUT FOOD...and how food became cultural markers that we now call cuisine. great graphics. i love this book so much i have given as a gift to several people who also loved it.

Very interesting book! I actually purchased this after taking an audio tour of the Getty museum and this book (and author) were quoted in regard to one of the paintings. The little clip was intriguing enough for me to want to buy the book. It get's a little dry in certain spots, but overall the book was very enjoyable and extremely informative.

As a Chef i found this a great read.If you ever wanted to know about food history this is the book for you.

This book is responsible for my current lack of sleep. It is absolutely riveting and a most amazing history of cuisine within its cultural context. As an agribusiness academic who also loves to cook recipes from many different parts of the world, this book was a revelation. As the author admits, she can only paint with a broad brush and invites readers to explore any particular aspect by consulting other more in-depth books. Just amazing.

The songs in this collection are among Berlin's best. I was pleased to see such a fine variety of well-known and some lesser known tunes from America's greatest songsmith. My main complaint is that some of the textures are a bit thin. I compared the original edition of the novelty song "You'd Be Surprised" and as in many of the arrangements in this anthology, the original had fuller harmonies provided by the familiar technique of using broken chords in the left hand. This editor usually opted for a single bass note (rather than the octave) on the down beats and the off beats are either missing or played by the right hand in the alto range. While this may make the arrangements slightly easier to play it sacrifices the fullness and rhythmic vitality and drive of the original. Also, with regard to "You'd Be Surprised" I found the verse is missing which is a shame because it is vital to the story of the song and adds greatly to the humor. In many of the arrangements there is a penchant for tenths in the left hand which most people will need to roll. This is really not any easier that using a broken chord which would provide more movement and energy. As with most of these Hal Leonard publications the notes are clear and easy to read and the book is sturdily bound. It does not lay as flat as one would hope but I personally do not care for spiral bindings which do lay flat so I hope that, in time, the spine will flex a bit more without the pages falling out.

If you like Irving Berlin (and who doesn't) and you play piano or sing, then this collection will give you all of the most popular songs, as well as some that I did not know was written by Irving Berlin. Loved the first few pages of photos, and brief glimpses into Mr. Berlin's incredible life. I think of all my music books as treasures, but this one I know I will cherish...just so uniquely everything "American".

Can't complain about the number of songs included in this anthology, but the arrangements lacked originality. Most of the pieces give the melody to the piano (often in the left hand) so they can be played as piano solos. I'd rather have seen a piano accompaniment for a vocal soloist.UPDATE: I upgraded my review to five stars because Irving Berlin is a genius, and this book reflects a wide array of his catchiest tunes. Great fun for your next impromptu sing-along with family and friends. If you don't already have a compendium of Berlin hits, this is an excellent place to start.

Irving Berlin is, of course, gold. He also founded ASCAP. His compositions are accessible, but varied enough to remain interesting. They're about right for an intermediate piano player who enjoys standards.

Wonderful song book with lots of songs I know but didn't realize they were written by Irving Berlin.

So pleased to have it. the arrangements are unusual in that they are "jazzy' but simplified compared to the Porter, Gershwin and many other anthologies it comes to join

This is a nice group of Irving Berlin songs. Did not like the arrangement of Say it With Music, the piece for which it was purchased, but it is nice to have so many other Irving Berlin songs to try playing (on the organ)

This seems to be a very comprehensive collection, and it is clearly printed and easy to read. However, the binding is stiff and the pages don't stay open; I will continue to sit on the book with the pages open, with time and persistence I'm hoping the pages won't keep closing on me.

What I really liked about this book is that it not a "how to..." book at all, but rather it is very personal memoir of all of Hageseth's experiences starting five years ago from a naïve "What's this marijuana thing?" to becoming of the most successful growers/purveyors in Colorado today. For this reason, this memoir is a MUST READ for anyone who wants to learn a little more about this new frontier of medical/recreational drugs. Particularly helpful to me was Hageseth's candor with respect to his multiple failures until he got it right, helping me to appreciate how seemingly invisible and often subtle variables are inevitable and unavoidable, and not because my particular overtures were "jinked." In addition to being valuable to folks contemplating getting into the business, this memoir is a really GOOD READ for anyone interested in piercing the purple haze of this as yetuncharted terrain.

WOW!Big Weed offers an amazing view, from the inside, of what is going on in the MJ business. The author has seen it all. This book is a backstage pass to the ins and outs of the "Business" of legalized pot.I will never listen to a news story the same.I "highly" (no pun intended) recommend this book. Book was interesting enough to crush it in one sitting. I would highly recommend "Big Weed" those who want to learn more about the business side of this rapidly expanding industry from the POV of an entrepreneur who got in on the ground floor of one of the first States to legalize MJ.

This is an amazing story about a whole new industry that has been despised by our government for decades, this is Americana at its best! Please if you haven't already taken a 420 vacation GO! There are so many different strains and YOU DON'T HAVE TO SMOKE POT anymore to recieve the benefits! There are so many great things this can do for our economy! Good luck to all the folks in the industry!

Cons: dryPros: gives you a birds eye view of the industry in a very general way. Its a worthy read but its just not entertaining enough for the average reader.That said, it does show you a first hand account for that time period. Gold nuggets of information can be found if you can keep your eyes open.

Absolutely loving this book!!! It is so refreshing to see this industry through the eyes of a proven business man (as opposed to clinicians or stoners).It is a powerful blend of professional insight interspersed with personal narrative. I recommend this book highly for anyone wanting truly understand the truth about this industry and one of the last uncharted frontiers in our world. There is so much potential awaiting us and Big Weed will help us realize it!!!

there are many great photos and locations to visit in this book, but the way it's laid out is difficult to follow. it's divided by longitude, which is unique, but within those divisions, there is no flow to the destinations. it would be very difficult to find all the information about a single country, it's just strewn throughout the book.

The book's content is okay- brief snippets of information about various sites around the world. The images in the book are a bit disappointing, there is not vibrancy in the photos. The book was also purchased as a gift and came (either due to pre- or post- shipping handling) with bent edges- I was hesitant to gift it because it looked used.

Could be the best gift ever! My boys love this book, trips to take are all over the world and are arranged by order of their GPS location as well as desired effect of trip whether it be educational, fun, romantic, etc.! Stunning photography too makes it a pleasure to leaf through as well as display for your guests.

Got this for my dad as a birthday gift, he loves it and is actually changing some of his travel plans to do some of the unique things written about in the book. I also enjoyed looking through the content, it’s nicely laid out and easy to skim through based on area.

Nice destinations are listed. But the way the destinations are organized is not practical for a regular traveller. They are arranged by longitudes which makes it really confusing if you want to explore a particular region you want to travel.

I ordered this after I glanced though this book in the store, selling for quite a bit more money, and immediately wanted to keep reading. There are so many creative ideas that your "bucket list" will become full very quickly. As you read, the ideas start at the most northern part of the world and work down to the most southern. The ideas are typically a few quick sentances which makes it very fast to read.

This is a great book to give individuals getting ready to retire or graduate college. Beautiful pictures.

Caves are fascinating places, so I can understand the appeal to these young soccer players and their coach to go exploring. The individual stories are told with great care and respect. How their stories are woven together to show how the boys were rescued could only have been written by a first rate journalist. Well done!

Better than Matt Gutman's book, who got some basic facts wrong (so I question the accuracy of his book). This book focuses more on the unsung heros (not just the military, government, and divers) who provided resources and support to the rescue, including a few details of life in the cave from an interview with one of the kids and his father and only disclosed with the father's permission.

This is a fantastically written book. Even knowing the outcome, the suspense makes it difficult to put down. Beautiful.

I was able to pre-order the book at a discounted price. I was concerned that it would just be a rehash of the news stories, but figured that at the discounted price it was worth a shot. I was not disappointed. The author shares much that was not included in the news. The detailed account of the rescue literally took my breath away. I am a certified open water diver, not a cave diver, but I still cannot imagine how these guys rescued the kids and coach. It was a miracle Although they don't think they are heroes, I disagree, they are that and more. The book also highlights how much cooperation and love was shared among all the worlds citizens and especially the Thai people to accomplish this. In a world so filled with hate, this book truly shows that there are some good people out there. It also covers some of the difficulties and conflicts that needed to be overcome. Well written interesting story. A must-read in my opinion.

Well written and many details not previously shared by media. A story of true international cooperation with a happy ending

I loved this book of the rescue of the 12 boys and the coach. Well written, with lots of details on the boys and the coach, and the rescue, but also on all the people involved in the rescue, and how they meticulously planned, rehearsed, and made adjustments to their strategy. And the one Australian cave rescue diver, Dr. Harry, who may very well have made all the difference in a successful rescue. This was a fascinating book that I could not put down. Disclaimer: I am not related to Liam Cochrane...as far as I know!

I love this series. It is fast paced action from beginning to end. Sasha is learning to control her visions and begins to rely on her instincts more. Sasha is asked to fulfill the debt to Baba Yaga by doing something that she is especially resistant toward. To force her Ariel is kidnapped and held hostage until Sasha frees her with Felix and Vlad. There is a bloody battle that results in Sasha calling Nero for help. After she agrees to work for Nero again she discovers some very interesting things about her past. And then suddenly it ends and now I am anxiously waiting for the next book. I’m not sure how much time has passed since the first book but every minute of Sasha’s life has been action packed since she discovered she is a cognizant. Can’t wait. This series could go on forever!

This book takes place immediately after book 2. It is really just a continuation with both books taking place in less than a month's time. This book deals with aftermath of Sasha resignation from her job and Sasha's bargain with Baba Yaga. Felix, Rose, Vlad and Fluffster are consistent supporting characters in this one. I liked the expansion of these personalities. I found the imaginary dialog from Rose's cat Lucifer hilarious. Obviously the author is owned by a cat. The story has lots of action. Secrets are revealed at the end. The story will continue in book 4 and there is still much to resolve. Overall, I flew through this one and found it engaging and fun. Now I will wait for book 4.

I really like these book and even though it's told in present tense, I enjoyed all three of them. I usually stop reading an author who writes in this tense simply because it annoys me. Somehow the poetry of words just don't flow. He did a very good job, although sentences sometimes seem awkward. I love the characters in this book, they are beautifully designed. The story captures you from beginning to end. I have already purchased his next book and look forward to it.

Review of Reluctant Psychic, Sasha Urban Series: Book 3This third book answered so many questions and leaves us with no idea how the series will end. Reluctant Psychic is a wild ride. Sasha has run-ins with lots of nasty Cognizant’s from the earlier books. Not surprisingly we find out that Baba Yaga is not at all nice. And when Sasha refuses to pay the terrible price she demands for revealing part’s of Fluffster’s past. She kidnaps Sasha’s Room Mate Ariel. Holding her against Sasha’s compliance.A bloody battle ensues to get Ariel back from the powerful witch, and Sash out of her debt.At the end we find out a lot more about Sasha’s past and the connection that her boss Nero Gorin has with her. Leaving us with absolutely no idea of what will happen in Book Four.

What a great series. Original material flawlessly imposed over familiar tropes. Our main character's growth and faith is self has grown consistently throughout all 3 books. She is pretty fierce and very strong in this third book. Interpersonal mysteries are being uncovered and that process is fascinating. Her adjustment to her new world is challenging, as it should be. The series is action packed The author grows relationships steadily even with the rapid pace of the storyline. Highly recommend.

Sasha's past was hinted at. Her birth parents a mystery. Now some light has been shed and it is more than she bargained for.Very rich world building. The story is evolving and best of all the characters are not getting watered down into meaningless filler.Ariel has been forced to come to terms with her addiction. Felix is finally stepping unto the sunshine.The fight scenes are riveting gunfire and hand to hand. Don't forget the Zombies.Anxiously awaiting the next installment.

This is the third adventure of Sasha, a member of people in a a phantasy sci-fi blend mix in a New York universe. I would recomend reading the first and second of the series, otherwise you might be very disoriented by the many back references. That said, I can highly recommend the work. The book is well written and with lots of action, and the characters are very endearing. I have already pre- ordered the next volume.

This third book is even more intense than the previous two. And they blew me away! There is so much going on that I found myself taking short breaks just to get my head around all of it. There's lots of fighting and blood letting, and I'm beginning to feel a little bit friendlier toward the vampires in the story. But the last revelation really threw me for a loop! I have to know where this story is going! It's keeping me awake!
