This is a great book--informative and useful. A friend had lent me his First Edition to plan a group hike and I loved it.In addition to great information on each trail and park, the book has a bunch of useful tables in the front to help pick a hike. I often hike with my family--including a toddler whom I carry on my back, and a four-year old--so distance and grade are very important factors. And the distance guide is great--we're working on progressively longer trails, and this makes it easy. Also useful are the visual indicators of grade and altitude for each trail, in the form of a graph. This lets me know where to plan stops for hydration and rest.My only hope is that there's a third edition planned; a lot changes in four years, like the High Bridge Trail, which now includes a lovely bridge that crosses the Appomattox River alongside the piers of the original bridge. On the other hand, keeping track of such things and staying on top of them all is really better done on a website or blog than a book. Perhaps the 3rd ed. could include the development of just such a site.

We had a previous version of this book, which we loved and used extensively. We marked up the book a lot with our notes and ticking off visits! We bought this newer addition because some info was out of date (trail closures that are now reopen; new trails that didn't exist at the parks at the time of last edition, etc.). I'm glad to have the updated information, and there are a few new places included as well. I'd love to see another edition of this with different hikes, perhaps a book specifically on family hiking.

Grossly out of date! Claims know fees yet when you go to the hiking places you have to have permits which require fees!!!! I bought this for up to date info. 2nd edition reprinted in 2015 but fees have been in effect since 2012!!!!Will save my money and research manually in the future!

Grossly out of date, wrong info, fees wrong, parking wrong, maps not very good when they wernt out of date. Many of the places listed have changed dramatically.Dont waste your money on this one.

We love this book and have completed several hikes so far. It is also useful for finding bike trails. The info we have used has been accurate and complete. Good details included, like whether hunting is allowed on or around the trails (important in rural area during certain times of the year). Two thumbs up!

I appreciate this book, and just ordered another copy for a friend as a gift. Lots of info, also some places I did not even know about before this book. I keep my copy in my car, ready to use at any time.

This book has great trails for hiking around Richmond and good descriptions for navigating the trails. I definitely would recommend this book.

This book has been one of my best investment on hiking! It is simply my reference book. When I am going to plan a hike, I do not fail on using this book.

This is a great travel guide. The only problem with it is the type is so small I had to use stronger than usual reading glasses to be able to read it. (It's going to be a pain having to bring a second pair while travelling around Europe.)

Bought this as a gift for a friend moving to Europe. I love Lonely Planet and this book looked phenomenal!

Do not like the setup & organization of the book. Treated the two counties more like separate countries. Little information on train routes, EUro Rail pass. Suggested routes very limited. Would not recommend the book to anyone.

Brilliant. The most important book I've read all year. James Baldwin would have been proud of the searching eloquence of Hansen's book, her insistence on peeling back the lethal innocence of so many fundamental American myths, of American exceptionalism, of America's inherent goodness in the world, and of the widespread American assumption that, in smaller, weaker countries a suspicion of America can be dismissed as envy or knee-jerk anti-Americanism. Not so. I've lived in America for 35 years, but before that I grew up in South Africa, where many of the observations that Hansen makes about America's brutal interference in Turkish and Pakistani and Iranian and Greek politics have half-echoes.From the perspective of smaller countries—Turkey, Guatemala, South Africa, wherever—a gaping contradiction opens up between America's self-image as disseminator of democracy and it's on-the-ground actions to overthrow democracy, undermine sovereignty, prop up apartheid, install dictators. One of Hansen's essential points is this: so much American foreign policy has been premised on a binary of good and evil, a binary intolerant of—and ruinous toward—the infinitely varied local permutations of what particular societies consider to be their own particular ideals.If you belong to an empire, you—we—have to own our outsize responsibility, which first and foremost means owning your history. As Americans we are at liberty to forget, to remain in a cocoon of ignorance, not so the peoples who have been at the sharp end of America's actions.Others may see this book differently, but as a naturalized American I read it as a clear-eyed love letter to America, a challenge to the nation to become its own best self by facing up to the global (and internal) costs of its historical self-delusions. Suzy Hansen's recent book, "Notes on a Foreign Country", lives up to the expectation I had for it. The author, who spent years abroad, (mostly in Turkey) tells of a world which sees America very different from how we view ourselves. She introduces a healthy skepticism which should be an eye opener for most Americans...that we are far from the wonderful people we think we are and have contributed to a great deal of the world's misery. That's not to say she isn't pro-American, but Hansen uncovers why the United States is viewed as it is, relating conversations she has with individuals with whom she speaks. One thing the author says is that no matter where we go in the world, the first thing Americans feel is how superior we are to other countries and peoples. She exposes the notion of "American exceptionalism" as not much more than a jingoistic feeling designed to make Americans feel better about themselves. About the Author

I was born in Albany but grew up in the beautiful and historic Schoharie valley of New York state. I received a bachelor s degree in biology from the College of St. Rose and graduated from the Albany School of Cytotechnology (now a part of Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences). For sixteen years I worked in commercial cytopathology laboratories microscopically screening cell samples for cancer and cancer precursors. However, a fascination with paleontology ultimately led me to a career at the New York State Museum where I first microscopically examined disaggregated rock samples for Cambrian-age microfossils and, later, turned to paleobotany. In collaboration with colleagues from the NYSM, Binghamton University, and Cardiff University I helped make significant contributions to Devonian paleobotany through new discoveries pertaining to Earth s oldest forests at Gilboa, New York. Much of this research was published in the journal Nature. After retiring from the NYSM in 2014 I have been able to focus time and attention on light microscopy, my hobby of many years. In particular, I study the protists and micro-metazoans of freshwater environments. Most Wonderful in the Smallest came about as a result of realizing that there is very little literature available concerning freshwater microorganisms for the general public. I live in Rensselaerville, New York with my husband.

This is simply an excellent book on micro life and is written in a manner that is very enjoyable to read. Color photos abound, all taken by the author with modest equipment. A science background is preferable, but not required, to appreciate the wonderful microscopic world she describes in such a riveting manner. The joy and attachment the author has to the natural world surrounding her is readily apparent and she is able to express this in a conversational manner, and she refrains from going into detail that would detract from the readability of this book. The writing style is crisp, and flows nicely from month to month revealing the changes in inhabitants of the local habitats of Upper New York State, yet applies to most of the broad area of Eastern U.S. Having spent the past few years taking pictures and videos through my own microscopes of the local micro-life here in Western Pennsylvania, I can truly appreciate the effort that it took to put this wonderful book together. If you love biology, microscopy, and nature in general, this is a must have for your library. I recommend this and "Guide to Microlife" by Rainis and Russell.

I am using this work book with my daughter, who is five. I like this because I want her to be able to read music and know music theory. Unfortunately, to small children (and even some adults) music theory is bland. This book does a very nice job of breaking lessons down so you can do one page each day and supplement with a piano book of your choice. I chose a piano book that uses a color code for the time being until she can read treble clef and bass clef. She was super excited to paint her nails all the colors of a rainbow, and it works in nicely with what I'm always telling her about "rainbow fingers" on the keyboard, not flyswatter hands.

I recommend this for any beginning young piano student. The pictures are engaging and you will learn note names on the piano by writing. Kids can work at their own pace through the book. If you want a child to read music and maybe you dont read music, I recommend starting with this series. It would be excellent for an elementary music classroom. This is a book you write in I recommend not to buy it used or make sure it has not been written in.

I'm so excited how quickly my 6 year old is catching on to music theory while studying Doctor Mozart . Lessons are very thorough and complete. perfectly paced for young ones just starting out with music theory. I bought the complete set of 7 books plus the answer book and plan to use it as my two boys music theory curriculum.

A great way for people of all ages to learn. It's a very broken down, easy to understand, and fun workbook that will have you and your young children learning how to read music and play the piano/keyboard/organ in no time! I paired the books with someMusical Mentor Piano Stickers to help out with playing songs until we have the keys fully memorized.

The book has done wonders for my 7 year old who has only recently began reading. We read the instructions together, and complete the exercises. The book moved very slowly, reinforcing again and again the concepts. For an older person, or someone precocious it may not be the right pace, but it's perfect for my kid who has difficulty with language, and staying on task.

Great for little attention spans. Keeps my daughter's interest and she remembers what she learned. Lessons are short and sweet.

I'm using it with a 5 years old and a 7 years old.Is very easy to understand even for the 5 years old (this is the first time he is being expose to music)Highly recommended

Jay Coakley is Professor of Sociology at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. He received his Ph.D and M.A. from the University of Notre Dame in Sociology and received his B.A. from Regis College (Denver). Went through this text while in my first semester of a Sports and Performance Psychology class, SOOOO GOOD! My outlook has changed for the better and I feel more excited and prepared than ever to move forward in this career. Would love to meet the author and shake his hand!

I started a class while I was deployed and knew that I wasn't going to receive a paper version of this book in time. While I do enjoy reading digital books, I've always preferred highlighter to paper for text books. Well, a kindle version of this book worked perfectly in a pinch. I downloaded the night before class and got an "A" in the class. In the future, I just might do another e-textbook. Oh yeah, the text was written clearly with excellent references. It could easily be a good leisure read. Not bad for a textbook.

Probably only 1 of the 2 or 3 textbooks I've read so far in college. The author has some really good points & its easy to comprehend even if you don't have a Sociology background. Thoroughly enjoyed this paired with the class I took. Came in good shape, going to send back soon.

While I initially purchased this book for a class that I was taking this semester, I was surprised by the fact that this book had opened my eyes to a whole other side of sports that I was failing to see.

I hated reading this thing for class.

Arrived quickly, good read.
