Books on transferware (blue and white) pottery are very hard to find. And it's even harder to find a good one, that has enough information to be useful. This is a VERY nice reference book for transferware pottery. While not every pattern is pictured (an impossible feat considering how many different patterns there are), there are dozens and dozens of example pictures through out. Beautiful patterns - some of which I had never seen before. They also show numerous examples of the original painting or sketch or engraving next to the transferware pattern, which I found very interesting. Many makers/manufacturers marks and date stamps are covered also. This book doesn't even attempt to assign monetary prices to the patterns, but as a reference book you can't beat it. Well worth the money!

Fantastic

I wanted a book about flow blue porcelain

Very informative, but the vast majority of the photos are black and white! Not ideal. I would not have purchased the book had this been made known.

With over four hundred pages including at least one item illustrated per page plus forty items in colour this was a long awaited reference work for blue and white not encompassed by works on the major potters. And best of all, only half a page devoted to the willow pattern.Only a collector will value the true worth of this book. A british scene is a difficult item to narrow down as to the manufacturer but the variations here help immensley. British views, british scenery, dioramas are just a few of the series with examples shown, and with the help of border designs the series and manufacturer can be narrowed down if not identified absolutely. There are few dates given for the pieces but as most manufacturers used designs for as long as the design was fashionable or even the entire life of the nanufactory this is a lesser point. And lack of all-colour illustrations is irrelevant in a book on blue and white. As a collector of blue and white this is one of the most used and most useful in my collection; I have ten other books on the subject I would prefer to lose before this.

I bought this book without knowing anything about it, just being sure that if it was half as good as the previous work by these authors it would be worth having. A second volume of a reference work would imply all the best stuff, all the recognizable stuff went into the first; not so. While there would have been protests "you missed out X,Y,Z etc" here would be more contributions from the likes of Friends of Blue and other enthusiasts offering supplemental knowledge and new identifications as well as pictures of items. Some of the entries here have the suffix 'new', meaning it did not appear in volume one at all, and that is nearly every page. Old attributions are reinforced or amended as well as being supplemented.A slimmer volume at two hundred and forty pages with four hundred plus items illustrated and twenty eight in colour. The authors provide references to items from all the major sources as well as references to volume one. This book can stand alone but is best thought of as the second part of the Dictionary.

This is the second of two volumes by Coysh and Henrywood, and both are invaluable. The amount of information about blue-and-white transferware is unparalleled, and the illustrations are both copious and of excellent quality. As to the illustrations, they are mostly black and white. As long-time collectors, we did not find this particularly inconvenient. One knows the output is blue and white; and, as for the specific shade of blue and white, this varies so from not only pattern to pattern, but also from piece to piece within patterns, that it would be difficult as an editor to choose the correct variant. We have several hundred pieces of blue and every book of reference and periodical on the topic, old and new, and we have found this authority to be more useful than anything else for both learning and cataloguing.
