I wouldn't recommend this book if you wish to learn iPhone Game Development, they don't even have a reference to sprites, they don't run animations such as a walk cycle they show nothing of much use to 2D games unless they are games such as a tic tac toe or puck - i.e. where there are no animations just a solid state image bouncing about. The book is useful in other ways though so its not a complete loss, they do deal in detail with peer-to-peer networking etc such stuff which does belong in a game programming book and are very useful to know, so I wouldn't recommend this book if you would like to know how to code games with animations involving sprites but it is useful to have to know about networking specific to games so I would recommend it from that viewpoint which is why it got 3 stars and not 1.

As this book is a shallow attempt at "reference" and "teaching", I have written several responses to the publisher and the authors at AppsAmuck to no avail. Here's just one of the e-mails:"Your book, "iPhone Game Development", is a complete waste of money! The source is outdated and no longer works with current versions of Xcode and InterfaceBuilder. It's sad when I can't find supplemental links to the source code found on the CD-ROM because I purchased the eBook. That should have been included with a download link! You can't even progress past Chapter 2: Hello, World! because the instructions are no longer valid. You and your publisher don't even have a website to publish updates to the book, which is VERY important for a book dealing with programming and development. I am telling everyone I know to no longer purchase this book, or any other books written by AppsAmuck or published by Wiley Publishing. I would enjoy a refund but knowing you probably wrote the book for monetary reasons (as it doesn't even include any useful information on dealing with Cocoa Touch or OpenGL ES and instead rambles on about the app marketplace for no reason whatsoever) that's not likely possible. I will be posting a one star negative review of your book on Amazon.com so that others may know that your products are complete ripoffs and not supported. Get with the program, you should know as an "app developer" that the number one thing to do is keep your product updated and relevant.You are NOT relevant. Deleted from my Kindle."

Spends way too much time on game development theory rather than the programming aspects. Starts up with Hello World and then later on to tic tac toe, and a whole chapter on "Novelty Apps" where the authors drone on about techniques for making a flame animate. In the middle of this 500 page book, they finally seem to start getting into some more advanced topics in their "Producing Action Games" chapter and again they waste pages talking about "The online markeplace". As that chapter fades away and just begins to touch on useful game programming techniques for the iphone the authors veer away for the entire second half of the book in favor of a chapter on integrating with Facebook and another on "Understanding The Business of Software". Even a hopeful chapter called "Grasping Advanced Programming Topics' begins with exploring the camera! The last chapter is laughable, "31 Days of iPhone Apps", where they show you 31 pages each with a screenshot and a simple description of an all-too-simple game they created. So the book was really less than 200 pages on game programming and their chosen games designs were far too simplistic to be of value for anyone hoping to learn to code a game that anyone would ever pay even 99 cents for. Also, I saw no mention of game engines such as Unity Pro or Torque or Cocos2d which many of the REAL iphone game developers out there are using and making money with. There's just very little value offered here. Because of my opinion of this book, I have canceled my preorder of its sister book, "Cocoa Touch for iPhone OS 3".

I bought this book to get into game development on the iPhone. The direction and voice of the book glosses over details, picks random code snippets, and spends more time advising to check the code from the website. Speaking of just check [...], and you can save yourself the entire cost of the book. Maybe it gets better, don't know yet, but so far the first third of the book is terrible.

I enjoyed the first parts of the book where they were interviewing people from the show when it started and into the late '80s and early '90s. There's a wealth of interesting information there for fans of the show. Everyone being interviewed in that section is so far from their SNL days that they can dish with reckless abandon and you get some very candid interviews.Where the book falls apart, unfortunately, is when you start getting into the early 2000s. At that point it's obvious the authors are interviewing people who were still on the show at the time they were writing. Gone are the candid anecdotes to be replaced by stars talking about how great it is to be on the show and how they're fulfilling a lifelong dream.I can understand why this happened. You don't want to bite the hand that feeds you. The problem is that it really derails what was otherwise a very interesting book for the first half as people switch from dishing stories from their crazy younger days to current stars obviously avoiding rocking the boat.

Pleasant read, being reminded of some of the forgotten "players" and hazy years was nice. The idea of having so many different people's perspective gave a really good picture of just how difficult this has been to pull off for so many years. Spared no one's feelings when they were mentioned but also gave praise for the hard work most put in. Having a lot of different people's opinion about the same thing or the same person was really an interesting read. The writers had some of the toughest comments but they have the hardest job and it all fit together very nicely. The common theme of the players seeking Lorne's favor or just any crumb of attention he could toss them was just about pitiful at times and he is apparently one stingy guy with compliments, then the ones who claimed an easy "we were really close" relationship with him were almost as pitiful, the way they spoke made you think it was just what they were hoping was true. Found out new things about the players I thought I had probably read everything about, turns out there were still things to be told.

Live from New York, a behind-the-scenes history of the Saturday Night Live television series by James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales, was originally published in 2002. The latest edition, released in 2014, was timed to coincide with the show’s 40th anniversary and has been updated with coverage through the program’s 39th season. The book is an oral history comprised of brief bits of first-person commentary by hundreds of SNL cast members, crew, writers, hosts, and NBC network executives. The oral history approach evokes the collaborative nature of SNL and allows for the presentation of differing perspectives on events or controversies in the show’s history. The drawback to this approach, unfortunately, is that it all too often amounts to dozens of people making the exact same points over and over again.Miller and Shales are attempting to accomplish two goals here: the first is to give the reader an idea of what it’s like to work at SNL; the second is to establish the show’s place in television history. Towards the latter goal, it’s not surprising that much space is devoted to the formation of the show and the original cast of Not Ready for Prime Time Players. For the television historian, the endless debates over the details of the show’s creation may be important, but for the casual fan the network politics can get rather dull. I understand that Lorne Michaels is the heart and soul of SNL, and likely a comedy genius, but does anyone really watch the show for Lorne? Most likely you watch the show for its cast members, and what this book doesn’t do well is let the cast members’ voices be heard, unless they’re talking about Lorne. Writers are an important part of the show also, and it’s interesting to hear them talk about how certain sketches were created. Unfortunately, too many of the writers just discuss the same things over and over again—how hard it is to get stuff on the show, staying up all Tuesday night writing, and once again, Lorne. Even though everyone analyzes Lorne ad nauseam throughout the entire book, when you reach the end you get a final chapter entitled “Lorne” which is an absurd exercise in eulogizing the living.If you’re interested in romances or feuds between cast members, there’s little of that mentioned beyond what’s already common knowledge. Another problem with the oral history approach is that almost everyone is reluctant to say anything bad about anyone. There’s a few cast members that everyone seems to agree were difficult, and when the topic of worst host ever comes up, the usual easy targets are mentioned. Surprises are few. Some great cast members either declined to participate (Eddie Murphy) or are barely present (Will Ferrell, Mike Myers). The best part of the book is the Kevin Nealon/Jan Hooks/Phil Hartman years through the Sandler/Farley/Spade/Rock era, because that’s when you get the most cast input and the best idea of how much fun it is to put the show together. Surprisingly, an inordinate amount of time is devoted to the very recent years of the show, with a lot of unnecessary congratulatory back-slapping. From the way praise is heaped on Andy Samberg’s juvenile music videos, you’d think he were the next Fellini.Fifty years from now, television historians are going to consider this book a valuable documentary record of the history of SNL. For the fan, however, it can be a colossal bore. It’s so easy, even addictive, to just read the next little tidbit, but at the end of twenty minutes you realize you’ve just heard forty people say the same thing, and you wonder why you wasted your time. If you can find this book cheap, get it, but just look up the passages concerning your favorite cast members. To read the whole thing is a disappointing and mind-numbing experience.

I don't know how I've lived 21 years without this book. It's absurdly beautiful and will move you beyond words. I first borrowed this from my library, but before I even got a page through I knew I'd have to buy a copy of my own to reread and study. It's definitely one of my favorite books. I'm honestly thinking about buying several copies to give to my friends and family so they have no excuse not to read it, it's that good. This should be required reading for everyone on Earth. If you're wondering whether or not to read it, I'll make a decision for you: DO IT. You won't regret it.

This reviewer remembers getting his first copy of the book in Boston during the early 1950's, when it was widely circulated among college students at the time, as well as young adults who were starting out in that decade. It was a way to be non-conforming, without departing too far from traditional values. I recommend this book to anyone interested in philosophy, poetry and classic literature.

My lifetime favorite. I was introduced to this book in the '70s and I have never turned it down since then. I've kept on going back again and again to its beautiful and poetic messages. This book is so timeless and so inspiring that I couldn't keep quoting and sharing Kahlil's words with my kids, relatives, coworkers and friends. This is a book that I intend to introduce even to my grandchildren someday.

Save your eyes and do not purchase this particular copy!! Seriously, the book is only 38 pages.... so let's use the tightest, smallest font possible!? That makes noooo sense.This copy Is more like a 'phamplet' and not so much a bound book. I do not even require reading glasss yet I seriously will never read this copy. Seriously, it's maybe an 8 point font.If you want my copy, let me know. Sooooo frustrating and ridiculous.

The book should be titled contract interpretation. I thought I would find tailored contract drafting advice for start-ups and entrepeneurs , not so. Just stanhdard boilerplate that I learned in contracts in law school.I received this note from the author complaining about my review:Hello Mr. Wheelock,I wanted to let you know that I was disappointed to see your extremely negative review of my book today.Clearly the book contains far more information than "Just stanhdard boilerplate that I learned in contracts in law school." Your characterization of the book as just mindless "boilerplate," contrary to every other review, including Kirkus, is likely to deter many who would benefit from reading it for years to come, which is disappointing.You're obviously free to express yourself however you wish, but, by its title the book is clearly aimed at entrepreneurs and business professionals, and not experienced attorneys who work with contracts regularly, as both you and I do. I did not title it "Advanced Contract Drafting Techniques for Business Counsel."Just wanted to let you know that I had noticed, and been disappointed by, your trashing of my book.Sincerely,Paul A. SwegleI stand by my review. I did not use the word "mindless" anywhere in my review. In my experience as a corporate attorney, entrepeneurs and business professionals do not need this kind of primer on contract provisions because they already routinely deal with the basics discussed in this book. In my opinion entrepeneurs and business professionals need clear discussion of the types of contracts and specialized provisions for agreements between start-up founders, venture capitalists, restricted sales agreements of start-up equity between founders, principals and lenders, employment agreements between founders, capitalization and financing agreements among start-up principals, management of intellectual property rights, provisions for liquidation and/or bankruptcy. These are the deficiencies that prompted me to call out the author for his misleading title. This paperback is 6" x 10" and less than 150 pages. It is not what it is advertised to be - and in my opinion clearly not worth the money.

I am an entrepreneur, where business ideas run rampant in my thought process. One of the things that I have realized reading this book is to consider that every one of those business ideas potentially could require some sort of contract and or negotiation. This is where Paul's book comes in handy. What I have noticed is that it is an easy read and an easy reference guide for looking up information that pertain to common contracts and negotiation.I know the author Paul Swegle personally... this is a person that I think has at least 4 identical brothers...one who plays drums professionally (ala Kieth Moon), one who seems to hike upwards of 100 hikes a year including climbing Mt. Rainier, another one who runs a successful Law Office, and then another who has a successful Air BnB that has one of the highest ratings out there....and he is a dedicated father of 2 very active teenagers and now has written this book in his spare time.So there have been many times sitting over a beer or during a commercial watching a Seahawks game I have brought up a legal issue with Paul and now to think that I now have this easy to read manual at my fingertips.

Paul Swegle writes with the voice of experience. A longtime corporate attorney, he has much to share on the subject of negotiating, drafting, implementing, and working with contracts--and he does it in plain language, accessible to non-lawyer businesspeople. This easy-to-read and easy-to-use little book is the only desktop handbook to contracts you'll ever need. It's a delightful and insightful read, handy for looking up a specific topic or for just spending an hour introducing yourself to the language and world of contracts. This should be on every businessperson's desk, from top executive to beginning entrepreneur.

I've taken a legal class from Paul Swegle and can tell you that the price of this book may save you a lot of money and headaches in the future. You may learn, as I have, that they have a healthy respect for clients who have thought things through or at least have made the sincere effort and preferably before the negotiations begin if not the drying of the ink (so to speak) on the contract signature block.As for the book proper, I find it succinct though in some places quite abrupt and almost perfunctory in its treatment of certain substantive topics. In fairness that's what the author may have aimed for.

A very well done, if brief, history. The author builds up to the assassination giving you a thumbnail of most of the key figures. Very well done, in my opinion. Note- the page count includes a very extensive section of references. The actual book is 239 pages long.

Even the best nonfiction has some boring parts. A story about an event will have slow passages. A biography will have to cover the mundane parts of a person's life. This is especially true when the story is well known and covers ancient history.In the case of Barry Strauss, writing boring text seems to be impossible. The Death is Caesar is doubly impressive in that Strauss is a fine historian who thoroughly researches the subject. Strauss sets the background by explaining the motivation of the assassins. Caesar had just become a perpetual dictator. He was about to launch an attack on Parthia. If he achieved his usual military success it would have consolidated his position. Not only would the beloved republic come to end, but the position of the assassins would be weakened.The motives were misguided. The republic was designed for a city state, not a growing empire. It was a glorified gangster state, frequently descending into autocratic rule. Killing Caesar accelerated its end.Most of us know about two of the leaders, Brutus and Cassius. Strauss calls attention to the third leader, Decimus. Decimus talked Caesar into going to the Senate on the Ides of March. He provided the gladiators who protected the killers from Caesar's allies. Initially it looked like a compromise would let the assassins get away with it. The turning point was the reading of Caesar's will and Marc Antony's funeral oration. The will named Decimus, turning the mob against the ingrate. Antony's speech, which wasn't like the one presented by Shakespeare, sealed the hostility towards the assassins. They were forced to flee and died in the ensuing civil war. In the end Caesar's heir Octavian became the emperor Augustus.This book is rich in detail. We get specifics on the daggers that killed Caesar. We get capsule biographies of the main characters. All in all this an excellent and informative book.

I’ve now read four books by Cornell history professor Barry Strauss, and The Death of Caesar is perhaps the most eye-opening of them. Whether we first came to the Ides of March by way of Shakespeare, Suetonius, Plutarch, or the reliable histories and biographies written in modern times, we invariably came away with the understanding that Caesar’s friend Brutus and the ambitious, coat-changing Cassius were the dual wellspring behind the dictator’s assassination. Strauss makes a convincing case that the key man was one who is relatively forgotten in most accounts, Caesar’s even closer friend and longtime lieutenant, Decimus Brutus. Strauss renders a thrilling, almost hour-by-hour, minute-by-minute account of the conspiracy, one that might have come undone at several points. We know how it ends, but it might well have gone another way, with incalculable results for Rome and western civilization. My most surprising read of 2015.

The book is quite interesting especially in view of the fact that the circumstances of the death of Caesar are a mystery to practically no one. However, along with a rich background leading up to the death, it does provide a lot of details that, being grouped differently, allow comparisons that may not have been obvious to amateurs rather than professionals in classical history. Case in point, the enumeration, background and relationship to Caesar of the main conspirators.On the other hand, some of these details and comparisons can become a bit tedious as not all are of the same importance as the background of the perpetrators. So that is the reason I took off one star.The book is written in language that is plain - as compared to academically stilted - and for any amateur interested in classical history a very easy, worthwhile read.

Well written and reearched account of the assassination of Julius Caesar and it's aftermath. If you are only familar with the Shakespeare play you learn how complex the conspiracy was. The conspirators included not only senators but close friends of Caesar. Also you learn of thrones complicated family relationships between the conspirators. Reads like a novel and very enjoyable.

On the Arabic and Muslim side al-Ghazâlî's acceptance of demonstration (apodeixis) led to a much more refined and precise discourse on epistemology and a flowering of Aristotelian logics and metaphysics. With al-Ghazâlî begins the successful introduction of Aristotelianism or rather Avicennism into Muslim theology. After a period of appropriation of the Greek sciences in the translation movement from Greek into Arabic and the writings of the falâsifa up to Avicenna (Ibn Sînâ, c.980 1037), philosophy and the Greek sciences were naturalized into the discourse of kalâm and Muslim theology (Sabra 1987).
